Mozart

Mozart’s Music
The music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is perhaps the most well-known of any composer the world has ever seen. Almost everyone has heard of how Mozart was composing music by the age of five (some urban legends even claim it was at age two) and performing before kings and queens, dukes and duchesses, before he was seven years old. He created more than 600 compositions, from operas to sonatas to full symphonies, and died tragically, mysteriously, before his 36th birthday in 1791. Some of his more famous pieces of music include Eine kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music, 1787) and the operas Don Giovanni (1787) and Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute, 1791).
The movie Amadeus (1984) put into popular parlance the idea of Mozart as an immature and spoiled musical prodigy, given to fast living and obnoxious, braying laughter. It also portrays him as having been tormented by a brooding, jealous rival composer named Salieri, who may or may not have killed him. History paints only a slightly less dramatic picture. Born in 1756 in Salzburg, Austria, Mozart was the only son of a professional musician who very early on recognized the boy’s extraordinary musical talent. Today’s critical and politically correct eyes may look with disfavor on the way that Leopold Mozart exploited his son’s musical genius, but at the time it was neither uncommon nor unacceptable to parade child prodigies through the courts of Europe. The young Mozart spent his boyhood at the feet of kings and queens, performing and composing and perfecting his unique musical vision.
He also spent his childhood suffering from various illnesses—tuberculosis, tonsillitis, and typhoid are just some of the many ailments he is said to have suffered. He was a sickly child and each bout of poor health left him reduced in vigor, more frail, and more susceptible to what would, ultimately, kill him. Legend has it that he was poisoned, but recent, more scientific explanation has it that he died of rheumatic fever, even while working to complete one of his greatest musical accomplishments, the Requiem.
Mozart’s music, like his life, defies easy classification. As a product of what historians term the Classical Era (1750-1825), he perfected the prevalent musical forms of symphony, opera, and concerto, and yet he also turned them on their heads. The upper-crust audiences for whom he played were jarred by his complex, mysterious, sometimes raucous music, accustomed as they were to lighter, more frivolous pieces. In 1782, the Emperor Joseph II even told Mozart that his German opera had “too many notes.”
Such a characterization of Mozart’s music may well seem absurd to us today, who have been conditioned to think of Mozart as an unparalleled genius. Even before birth, babies are rocked to sleep by Mozart’s music being piped into their mothers’ wombs. We relax to his music, we grow to it, we learn through it; his music enriches and inspires our lives.

Memorizing your piano lessons

Memorizing your piano lessons
People have been debating the pros and cons of the memory technique used in taking piano learning lessons. Some of the champions of this technique line up a long list of benefits those can be accrued from this technique. Their major claim for the suitability of this technique lies in the perception that the player doesn’t need a book to turn to for taking the lessons or playing the piano. Once can simply memorize and start playing the instrument. Another advantage cited by these people is that the player doesn’t need to divert his attention to book – one can concentrate solely on the fingers. This focused attention leads to better performance. Moreover, one need not spend time on turning the pages of the book. Add to that the benefit of ability of playing piano anywhere, even if the book is not available. The benefits can be stretched to an extent where the player can play the piano in dark and that it can also be done by closing eyes.
Those against the use of this technique for piano learning lessons assert that this technique is difficult for some people. People with limited memory retention are at a disadvantage to use this technique. Even if a student is good at it, he may forget some parts of the lessons while performing, and this may have detrimental effect on his overall capabilities of taking piano lessons and play at a pro level.
While you are taking piano lessons, it is important to know what to be memorized. In other words, which pieces must be memorized so that the performance is not at risk. One must be very good listener in order to have larger chunk of piece being memorized with ease. Further, you must try to memorize something which you have started practicing. It shouldn’t be other way around – you first memorize and then memorize the same.
You or your tutor must be able to analyze the piece by splitting it into parts clearly identifying the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic units separately. This analysis must mandatorily precede memorizing. Experts also offer this piece of advice for those taking piano lessons – technique of verbal mediation. This technique employs simple procedure – student should speak out the lessons and practice it simultaneously. Memorizing process can be reinforced with the help of visual memory.

Memories Are Made Of This : The Golden Years of The Sixties Music Revolution

Memories Are Made Of This : The Golden Years of The Sixties Music Revolution
I suppose my first realisation that music was something more relevant than learning the words to carols for the school Christmas concert was appreciating my Dad’s collection of 78s’. He was a man with unusual tastes in music. My contemporys’ parents listened to American crooners, like Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and the like, or the big band sounds of the day.
But my Dad had individual tastes which included Eastern European folk music, Scottish bagpipe ballads and Welsh miners choirs; plus my first introduction to classical such as exciting pieces like Aram Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance”.
My Mother, a dedicated Crosby fan, disliked these strange sounds to the extent that she banished any playing of the ‘caterwauling’ to our barn, a large wooden structure at the back of the house. This suited my Dad, and me, just fine.
He would mend bikes and tinker with machinery in one corner, while I would curl up on a battered leather sofa looking at pictures in old movie magazines, giggling at jokes in back copies of Lilliput and reading girlie type books (Little Women, Black Beauty etc.) while the haunting strains of Bulgarian womens’ voices, Highland airs or the overwhelming sound of Welshmen giving it their all emanated from the old wind up gramaphone; memories are made of this.
Musically I’ve come full circle. with the increasing popularity of ‘world music’ I am, once again, enjoying Bulgarian women’s harmonies and Welsh folk songs along with the exciting newcomers from African and Latin American roots.
Every generation, mostly, think that they have experienced the ‘best’ period of topical music, but I do feel that the sixties were a special case. Consider this; any weekend my friends and I had a difficult decision to make. Did we go ‘up town’ to Ken Colliers to see American blues stars like Big Bill Broonzy or jazz giants like Dizzy Gillespie; or perhaps to the Marquee or 100 Club to listen to the up and coming Britishers like Paul Weller in the Jam, Eric Clapton and the Yardbirds and Georgie Fame with the All Stars.
Or did we stay closer to home and go to the Riki Tik in Windsor and risk asphyxiation in the tiny room listening to an exciting new group called the Rolling Stones. And that was only the start; what about Osterley where you could hear John Lee Hooker, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee and any number of other Southern American blues stars; or Windsor Drill hall where, on a Friday night you could enjoy the best of Cyril Davies and the All Stars, which usually featured one of my favourites, Long John Baldry.
And, if you were willing to risk parental wrath, it had to be Eel Pie Island in Twickenham, a den of iniquity where you could hear the best of new rhythm and blues; smell strange substances burning in the air and where I first encountered psychadelia in the shape of Pink Floyd whose innovative light shows of coloured lava lamp blobs popping and forming ever different shapes were the precursor of the giant video screens of today. To say we were spoilt for choice is not to overwork a phrase.
I haven’t even mentioned the many folk clubs sprinkled about which I visited with my friend Lucy as a guest singing duo, where we shared stages with the likes of Bert Jantz, Duster Bennett, Cat Stevens . . We would travel to isolated venues in the heart of the Berkshire countryside and find ourselves in a barn somewhere, with people sitting on hay bales and listening to the stirring voices and lyrics of Sandy Denny, Davy Graham and John Remborne, or even the Wurzels (bring your own cider!).
If you wanted to dance, but strictly not ballroom, you could stomp the night away at a selection of ‘trad jazz’ clubs. Bands of various styles were always on tap; Dick Morrisey, the aforementioned Ken Collier, Acker Bilk; It really was a golden age for live music of every kind. And it didn’t cost an arm and a leg to indulge yourself. If we paid more than a couple of quid to get in we felt hard done by. Even special occasions, like seeing the Who or Cream at the Hammersmith Odeon were cheap at the price.
Wherever we hung out with our mates there was music. This was the age of the coffee bar, always with a juke box in the corner belting out such classics as ‘Dock on the Bay’, or Buddy Holly’s latest or Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Joan Biaz; where to stop! Before the fashion for ‘personalised music’ (catered for firstly by the Walkman and now in it’s newest incarnation, the ipod) the latest tunes brought like minds together. A normal Saturday outing was to the local record shop where friends would crowd into a booth together to hear the latest in the ‘charts’.
Maybe it was all just ‘fashion’ but, as the years race by, that sixties music has stood the test of time. Many of our heroes are still household names. Our children still appreciate such giants as Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding. The likes of Paul Weller, Rod Stewart, the Rolling Stones still tour all over the world. Am I showing my age when I find it hard to appreciate modern day offerings? Of course I am but no more than any other person who has let music into their life.
From the moment the first cave man (or woman) discovered how to make musical ’sounds’ from reeds or rocks, water or wood, we have enjoyed the privilege of a great gift. How to explain the catch at the back of the throat when we hear a familiar song or melody? How to describe the pure feeling of exhilaration and joy as many human voices come together to sing some particularly uplifting work. I dare anyone to say they have never felt that. And if some hardened souls insist that is the case; well I feel very sorry for them.

Medieval and Renaissance Europe Music

Medieval and Renaissance Europe Music
Medieval and Renaissance Europe
While musical life in Europe was undoubtedly rich in the early Medieval era, as attested by artistic depictions of instruments, writings about music, and other records, the only European repertory which has survived from before about 800 is the monophonic liturgical plainsong of the Roman Catholic Church, the central tradition of which was called Gregorian chant. Several schools of liturgical polyphony flourished beginning in the 12th century. Alongside these traditions of sacred music, a vibrant tradition of secular song developed, exemplified by the music of the troubadours, trouveres and Minnesanger.
Much of the surviving music of 14th century Europe is secular. By the middle of the 15th century, composers and singers used a smooth polyphony for sacred musical compositions such as the mass, the motet, and the laude, and secular forms such as the chanson and the madrigal. The introduction of commercial printing had an immense influence on the dissemination of musical styles.
European Baroque
The first operas, written around 1600 and the rise of contrapuntal music define the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque era that lasted until roughly 1750, the year of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach.
German Baroque composers wrote for small ensembles including strings, brass, and woodwinds, as well as Choirs, pipe organ, harpsichord, and clavichord. During the Baroque period, several major music forms were defined that lasted into later periods when they were expanded and evolved further, including the Fugue, the Invention, the Sonata, and the Concerto.
European Classical
The music of the Classical period is characterized by homophonic texture, often featuring prominent melody with accompaniment. These new melodies tended to be almost voice-like and singable. The now popular instrumental music was dominated by further evolution of musical forms initially defined in the Baroque period: the sonata, and the concerto, with the addition of the new form, the symphony. Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, well known even today, are among the central figures of the Classical period.

Mamma Mia! A Must See Show

Mamma Mia! A Must See Show
Perhaps no band over the last few decades still resonates with its fans quite like ABBA. The Swedish super band still reigns as one of the best selling and most popular groups of all time, and even though the band has no plans of reuniting and touring the world again, fans can hear ABBA music performed live in the amazingly successful musical Mamma Mia!
Written, choreographed and led by a former member of the group, the musical Mamma Mia! tells the story of a lonely girl who is in search of her biological father. The production is funny, touching, inspiring and most of all, fun! The music of ABBA is featured throughout.
Mamma Mia! has been a hit on Broadway and on tour around the world for many years now, and just like modern theatre classics such as Cats and Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia! seems to get more and more popular as the years go on. No other musical before or since has helped to popularize jukebox musicals quite like Mamma Mia! (A jukebox musical is a modern musical that uses rock or popular music for its main musical score, rather than its own music.)
Even with the amazing success of those musical productions, they pale in comparison to what Mamma Mia! has accomplished. Seen by an estimated 10 million people and even giving birth to a full-length feature film starring superstars Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, Mamma Mia! has done what few musicals have – attracting a large audience of those who otherwise didn’t attend musicals.
This is no small accomplishment, and it speaks volumes about how the play is so much more than just a bunch of ABBA songs built around a flimsy plot. The story is a classic coming of age story about a young girl on the verge of womanhood who is looking for the missing links in her life. She is wondering where she came from, what traits she has that she shares with her father, and where her life will lead. The story, much like the music, is timeless and classic. Although the play ends on a bit of an odd note, the reprise at the end will literally send you into the aisles to dance the night away. It is true that this play probably wouldn’t have worked as well if it wasn’t for the popularity of ABBA and the fact that you simply can’t hear this music live anymore, but it is the acting, sets and the production quality that makes Mamma Mia! a true theatre classic.

Making Your Own Music: Songwriting Basics

Making Your Own Music: Songwriting Basics
Whether you are a teenager or are well into your golden years, it is never too late to explore your creative side, especially if you are interested in music. Songwriting is an excellent way to express your thoughts and feelings and to communicate them to your friends and family, even if you have no aspirations of musical fame or fortune. If you are interested in selling or performing your songs, however, you should be aware that it is a hard road and that very few songwriters achieve great fame or fortune, and especially not instantly. Nonetheless, if you have realistic expectations, you will find that writing music is a worthwhile experience whether it is a hobby or a profession.
People write songs in many different ways. Some writers compose the music first, while others first write the words. For some, the words and the melody come to them at the same time, while others write the melodies first and write the words last. No matter what order you are comfortable with, you will eventually have to decide what the song is about. There are a variety of different types of songs ranging from songs that tell fictional stories to songs that communicate deep personal feelings.
If you decide to write a story song, a good first exercise is to write about a news story or about something you’ve read in the newspaper. That way you can use your first song to hone your word choosing skills without the pressure of coming up with your own story. However, if you already have an idea for a story to tell, you can write it out in poem form and try to make appropriate rhymes and structures that help communicate what happens in the song.
Because music is so expressive, many songwriters use their compositions to express how they feel, whether it be about a person or a situation or even geographic location. Writing these types of songs can be highly personal, so every person does it differently. When you have a strong feeling about something, write it down in a notebook and come back to it later. You might think of a good line that expresses an emotion really well, and if you remember it you might be able to build an entire song around it. Having quiet time to think is always helpful when you are trying to write a song.
Writing the actual music for a song can be done in many different ways depending on your musical prowess and your focus. If you write mostly to communicate words, then a few well-chosen guitar chords might be all of the accompaniment you need. However, if you a instrumental virtuoso, your approach to writing music will be quite different. Many people think of a musical idea and play it over and over again until they think of a melody. Often times, songwriters will construct whole pieces, melody and all, without even knowing what the song is going to be about. Once the melody is complete, the writer will sit down and think about lyrics that fit the feeling behind the music and will go from there.
Once you have put together your words and music, you might feel the need to perform your new song. It is always a good idea to play for friends and family first before trying to play to a crowd. When you feel comfortable enough playing your song, you should consider visiting an open mic night at a local coffeehouse or bar. At open mic nights, songwriters can play one or more of their songs to an appreciative and attentive audience. Performers can discuss their craft with other writers, making it a fun way to learn more about the writing process.

Make friends playing the guitar

Make friends playing the guitar
Who doesn’t need more friends?
Making friends just got easier. The guitar is an incredible way to enjoy being with your friends because you’ve got something cool that everyone can do. This page will help you see why guitars are the magnet to attracting more friends. If you already know that you want a guitar, check out our guide to buying a new guitar page. Or maybe you already have a guitar and need to improve your skills, in that case start our guitar lesson 1.
The need for guitar players
Almost every band that is formed has at least one or more guitarists in it. Guitars have increased in popularity and need over the past few decades. Punk bands are now the largest type of bands around and they have guitars galore that range from bass guitar to lead guitar. Face it, guitars are cool.
Its no secret, the guitar is the friend making machine
The guitar is the perfect instrument to increase your circle of friends. From rocking with old buddies, to serenading the ladies, to campfire outings, a guitarist can always catch everyone’s attention. Guitarists end up being the life of the party. It’s a known fact that some of the most romantic scenes show being with a loved one, on the beach, guitar in hand, and singing a way. Thanks to the mobility of the guitar this scene can occur so many other places, such as: in front of a fireplace, candlelight dinner, picnic at the park, and on and on.
Benefits of playing the guitar
There several reasons why guitars carry such a popular pull. First, they are easy to learn, yet still offer a challenge because guitars take a lifetime to master. Second, they are transportable and convenient. Third, they are one of the few instruments that sound great by themselves and with other instruments. Fourth, this instrument makes you look good, by not requiring your face to be distorted by blowing into anything. Fifth, it’s an instrument you can share. Whether teaming up with your buddies and their guitars or just allowing your friends to sing along it’s still going to be a group involved activity.
Now it’s Your Turn to Learn the Guitar
At any rate, the only way to know that the guitar is for you and your friends is to give it a try. Good luck and maybe this can be one of those things that you can look back on and say, “I am sure glad I learned to play the guitar”

Make Your Own Beats, Instrumentals, Tracks, and Demo CDs

Make Your Own Beats, Instrumentals, Tracks, and Demo CDs
Many people are making an excellent living selling thier samples, tracks, and cd’s, on the Internet and off, even if they’re not with a major record label. Just look around on the Internet. People are paying $30 to $60 for small beat and and sound packages, $50 to $100 for small loopsets and beatsets, $100 to $300 for Instrumentals, $100’s to $1,000’s for complete tracks and samples, and for the few lucky ones like Jay-Z and J D… “Money aint a Thing”! They sell millions of their cd’s. There are thousands of people and even companies looking for new music everyday! Let them hear yours!
Whether you dream of Making It Big in the Music Industry, or are just interested in making some extra cash doing what you love, this article is for you. You will see the resources you need to make your own beats, loops, instrumentals, finished tracks, and complete demo cd’s. You will also see the resources you need to make money doing it. With that being said, let’s get to the part you are waiting for…
Part I: Make Your Own Beats, Instrumentals, Samples, Loops, Tracks, and Complete Demo CDs…
To do this, you will need a few things. First you will need recording studio software. Recording studio software is nothing more than a program that allows you to mix beats, melodies, chords, samples and loops to make your own customized instrumentals and tracks. They also allow you to record yourself as you sing or rap to your track and to make a copy of your tracks to cd.
You can find this type of software all over the Internet. Just do a search for “make your own beats” or “recording studio software”. As you search, you will notice that on average, this type of software will run you between $50 and $200. Don’t Buy Them (you’ll see why shortly)! Now you’re going to need beats, melodies, chords, samples, and loops to customize with your recording studio software, aka: soundsets and loopsets. Again, just do a search for “beats” or “loops”. They usually come in packages of about 200 soundsets for $30 and 300 loopsets for $60, or 600 soundsets for $75 and 900 loopsets for $150. Don’t Buy Them Either!
Alright, so at the minimum, $140 gets you the low-end studio software, 200 soundsets, and 300 loopsets… or if you want a little better quality studio software and more soundsets and loopsets, you can spend about $425 for high-end studio software, 600 soundsets, and 900 loopsets. That’s everything you need to make your own beats, instrumentals, samples, loops, tracks, and complete demo cd’s. But why did I say Don’t Buy Them?
Because you can get it all, the studio software and over 1,100 soundsets and loopsets for under 30 bucks with Hip Hop Starz Record Producer and Mixer Studio (see “about the author” at the bottom of this article). This is an unheard of price for everything you need, and it is of such good quality, I have dedicated an entire page of my Snoop Dogg website to it. It is loaded with many features you will find on the high-end software selling for $100 or more. Also, they are currently holding a Win A Record Contract Contest with Doug E Fresh. Use the software and enter to win!
So now you know how to make your own beats, instrumentals, samples, loops, tracks, and even complete demo cd’s, and this brings us to our next part…
Part II: Make Money Doing It…
There are many, many ways to make money with your own music. The first thing you need to do, though, is break it down into pieces, or components we will call them.
There are 4 key components to any track, or song. You have soundsets, which are nothing more than beats, sounds, scratches, etc. You have loopsets, which are your soundsets when put together in a loop. You have instrumentals, which are completed tracks with no voice or lyrics. Finally, you have completed tracks, which are basically just instrumentals that include lyrics.
When you look at music from this angle, broken down into components, you will start to see many ways to make money with your own. Like I mentioned at the beginning of this report, people are not only paying for completed tracks, they are also paying for the components individually. If you can create you own, good components, people will buy them.
Again, search the Internet for these components. Doing so will not only show you how much you can sell your components for, but also where you can sell them. As long as people are listening to music, there will always be a demand for it, and I can’t see people stopping anytime soon.
If you are interested in learning how to make money with your own beats in more detail, I recommend you check out Bob Bakers website (see “about the author” at the bottom of this article). Bob Baker is a writer, indie musician and former music magazine editor who is dedicated to showing musicians of all kinds how to get exposure, connect with fans, sell more CDs and increase their incomes through their artistic passions. He is also the author of the Guerilla Music Marketing Handbook, as seen in the major motion picture The School of Rock … and in VIBE, Music Connection, Electronic Musician and American Songwriter magazines. This is the guy you should listen to. Here are some of the things you will find at his website…

I hope this report has proved useful to you and I wish you all the best as you learn how to make your own beats, tracks, and even complete demo cd’s.

Major Pentatonic Scale

Major Pentatonic Scale
Major Pentatonic
The major pentatonic is similar to the minor pentatonic: The intervals for a major pentatonic are 1 2 3 5 6 1. The C major scale includes C D E G A C. The difference between the major and minor scale is the minor scale has a flatten 3rd interval. The following is the most common generic box shape for the pentatonic major scale:
The major pentatonic sounds happier and are not used as extensively in rock and blues as the minor version of the scale. They sound good over major chords, and power chords. Sometimes the minor and major scales are used in the same song, with the major scale used for the chorus, and the minor for the verse.
There are no hard and fast rules when in comes to scales and soloing. It s a matter of style and personal choice, as long as it sounds good, go for it. But you will find that if you use these simple scale forms in conjunction with an appropriate chord progression this will sound good more often.
A chord progression based on the A minor chord will sound good with A minor pentatonic and a C major chord will sound good with C major scale. For information on chord progressions please go to the section at our web site on chord progressions.
Minor Pentatonic
Minor pentatonic scales are used extensively in modern and classic rock. A strong understanding of how pentatonic scales work, and can be used for soloing and creating riffs, is extremely important. They are also the easiest and generally the first scales most people learn.
I assume you know how to read basic TAB format for this lesson. If you have not been exposed to TAB then you should review our lesson on reading guitar TAB before moving on.
The Minor Pentatonic scale consists of the following intervals: 1 b3 4 5 b7 1. In the key of A the intervals would be the notes of A C D E G A. There are 5 scale shapes in box patterns for the pentatonic scales.
The 5 is the fifth fret and is the root note, thus the name of the key and scale is A, the intervals determines the type Minor or Major. This scale shape above is the most scale and is used in rock, blues and most styles of music. If you move this entire shape up to positions on the guitar and play the same shape you will have a B minor pentatonic. Likewise if you slide the entire shape down two potions you have a G minor pentatonic.
Practice this scale shape several times a day, moving it into different positions or keys, for variety. Many of rocks most famous licks are derived form this shape. If you are going to play guitar learning this one basic shape is mandatory.

To date, Confessions has sold nearly 1.29 million copies in the United States alone. It continues to top sales charts in the UK, and Madonna was recently recognized as the female artist with the most number one hits in the UK. It seems almost certain that Madonna’s fan base will soon be pleading for her to finalize preparations for a Confessions tour. How do we know Madonna may be preparing for a tour? While not coming out and making it official, she has made some statements that hint at the possibility.
In a recent interview, Madonna spoke about some performances she has booked for the near future. She will be performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, on April 30, 2006. She said, “I am especially excited about playing Coachella before I start my own tour.” In some interviews Madonna even talked about her vision for her next tour, some ideas she has for its visual presentation on the stage and what the Confessions on a Dance Floor show will represent for her.
Madonna’s plans for her tour aren’t specifically connected to Confessions, but when she says things such as, “I want them (the audience) to feel like they’re inside a disco ball,” it’s hard to imagine that her vision doesn’t involve Confessions. Other statements like, “I want a sound system in surround and the dancers personalities to come out” indicates that a tour for Confessions is highly likely. So what is all this excitement about?
Confessions, the fourteenth album/CD created by Madonna, is a mix of anything you want it to be. It’s about power and empowerment and love and its costs. In this re-invention of Madonna herself and the disco-era, she has come back with possibly the best work she has ever done. There are blogs and message boards full of comments on Confessions. “I never even liked this woman and I have to say, this is real good stuff,” one person noted. Other comments include, “Only Madonna could bring back disco and dance with the popularity it had in the 1970’s.”
It has been suggested that not only will she tour but that she will focus, as she has in the past, on dance. Wherever Madonna goes many others follow. She wants people to “get out of their seats” in response to the music. She wants them to “have a good time straight through and non-stop.” Considering that one song on the CD is a hit single and she co-wrote and co-produced Confessions with Stuart Price, (Madonna’s musical director on her 2002 Drowned World Tour and last summer’s Reinvention Tour) one may assume that Confessions on a Dance Floor will be a visually extraordinary concert.
Madonna, of course, didn’t do this all by herself. The genius forces of musicality that worked with her on Confessions will no doubt help her make the tour just as successful as the CD. Assistance from artisans such as Bloosdhy and Avant (Grammy winners), the producer of Madonna’s last two albums– Mirwais Ahmadzai, and co-writer Henrik Jonback will bring the live version of Confessions to the stage.
Madonna’s part in producing this album comes from her fascination with post modernism and technology. In talking about the making of Confessions on a Dance Floor she said, “I’m trying to find the soulfulness in technology and playing with that. I would prefer to not have back-up singers. I would rather take my own voice and layer it and change it and put effects on it so it sounds like a lot of different tones and timbres.”
Madonna fans know that this artist loves her craft. She is excited about her music and passionate about bringing it to the stage. If you haven’t heard the entire CD yet, you are in for a treat. This is the kind of CD that requires you either find a place to relax and just listen or occupy a space where you can start moving. There is no typical break between the songs. This music will make even those that don’t dance get up and move their feet. The Mistress of Visual Artistry herself is the only one who can bring Confessions on a Dance Floor to life on stage. Throughout the world of music, it is rumored that this tour could start as soon as August or September 2006. Start getting in line for tickets!

MP3 Audio Format

MP3 Audio Format – Convenient yet powerful
Mp3 player is the most recent and popular music format that has inevitably helped the consumer to listen the tunes of their choice. The previous audio formats like the tapes, cassettes, CD’s didn’t give much convenience to the consumers in comparison to the mp3 audio format. Therefore, with the help of mp3 player, you can easily create personalized or customized music tunes and carry it anywhere you go.
How mp3 files work?
Mp3 files movement is much amazing as compared to music cassettes, CD’s and other audio formats. A CD stores music in the form of digital information. When a CD is created, music is sampled around 44,100 times per second. Separate samples are used both for left and right sound speakers of a music system. Thus, a CD stores huge amount of data i.e. 44,100 samples/second * 16 bits/sample * 2 channels = 1,411,200 bits per second. If we break it down, 1.4 million bits per second equals 176,000 bytes per second. An average song on a CD consumes about 32 million bytes of space and it takes much time while you download it. In case of mp3 audio format, the size of music file is reduced whereby a 32 MB music file is compressed to 3 Mb. Therefore, it could also be downloaded fast from the internet to your hard disk. At the same time, it will take much less space.
Why Mp3 has revolutionized the web?
It has made easy for people to easily distribute their music files at very less or no cost. It provides easy and instant accessibility to music files on the internet. People have learned a lot to manipulate sound on the computer. You can now easily;
1. Download an mp3 song from the internet and play it.
2. Rip any song from a CD and play it or encode it in mp3 format.
3. Record any song yourself, convert it into mp3 format and distribute over the internet to the rest of the world.
4. You can convert MP3 files into CD files and create your own audio CD’s from mp3 files over the internet.
5. Store a number of Mp3 files on data CD’s.
6. Load mp3 songs into any mp3 player and carry it anywhere you go.

Lyrics

Lyrics
Everyday we hear songs … new songs, old songs … we love some, we hate some … and from those we love we don’t want to miss a single word … but understanding song lyrics is not always easy. The goal of lyrics sites is to help you discover the songs you love.
As I was browsing the internet for casual song lyrics I ran into a lot of sites like lyrics.com, azlyrics.com, lyricsmania.com … and others … but what got my attention was this little site called lyricshunt.com. At first it looked like an ordinary lyrics site but when I clicked a couple of times I realized it had some tricks up his sleeve. Starting from an aritist/album/song search, continuing with a mixedsearch (e.g. http://www.lyricshunt.com/mixedsearch/50 cent/) and ending with the songs that were very accurate (at least the lyrics I was looking for).
The idea of “hunting for lyrics” and people working together to make the “song lyrics world a better place” is a good idea.

Looking To Store Compact Discs?

Looking To Store Compact Discs?

Have you entered the iPod and MP3 world? If you are like me and my kids, listening to a compact disc is a rare thing because we are now using iPods. But, I still have a ton of discs that I want to keep. I also have a lot of computer back ups on CDR that I need to store. So what’s the best thing to do with all of those CDs? What is the best storage method?
There are many CD storage alternatives and your perfect CD storage solution is probably different than mine. Factors including how many CDs you have and how long you want to keep them will influence your storage method.
Here are a few CD storage alternatives:
CD Jewel Cases
Pros – You probably already own one for the disc and they offer good protection. They can hold your cover art and are easy to line up on a shelf.
Cons – They break. They take up a lot of space.
Plastic CD Sleeves
Pros – They’re cheap and thin so they are easy on the pocket book and easy on the shelf space.
Cons – They’re thin and don’t offer much protection. Plastic sleeves are not recommended for long term storage. I’ve seen cases where they stick to CDs and pull off labels and even the metal surface. Plastic is what it is, it takes a long time to biodegrade when it gets into landfills.
Paper CD Sleeves
Pros – They’re inexpensive and don’t take up a lot of space. They are great for many short term storage needs.
Cons – They’re thin and offer limited protection.
Paperboard CD Sleeves
Pros – Paperboard sleeves are much thicker than paper sleeves so they protect your discs and they are relatively inexpensive.
Cons – They might be hard to seal if that is required.
Tyvek CD Sleeves
Pros – Tyvek sleeves don’t take up a lot of space and they are inexpensive. Tyvek is generally recommended for long term CD storage.
Cons – They’re thin and don’t offer much protection.
CD-ROM Disc Cases – with the Flip-Up Cover
Pros – They can hold a lot of CDs in a small space and may help keep out dust.
Cons – Reading CD labels is a pain.
CD-ROM Drawers
Pros – Keeps CDs out-of-site.
Cons – Keeps CDs out-of-site. Some people just prefer to see their collection. They take up space.
CD Wallets
Pros – They hold a lot of CDs in a small area and may help keep dust off the CDs.
Cons – If a discs is stored in a plastic wallet for a long time or if they are exposed to heat the label may stick to the plastic.
Three Ring Binders
Pros – They can hold your CDs and the CD cover art in one place. They sit on a bookshelf.
Cons – If a disc is stored in a plastic wallet for a long time or if they are exposed to heat the label may stick to the plastic. You have to flip pages to find your CD.
CD Spindles
Pros – They are cheap and hold several hundred CDs in a small stack.
Cons – Sorting through the stack of discs is a pain if you are searching for one specific disc.

Lil Wayne & His Music

Lil Wayne & His Music
Weezy F. Baby, otherwise known as Lil Wayne, was born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. in New Orleans, LA, on the 27th of September in 1982. He is also known by the monikers Birdman Junior, Raw Tune, Weezy or simply Dwayne Carter. He has been a resident of New Orleans until August 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf states and caused widespread damage. He has since relocated to Miami, FL. Lil Wayne claims to be “the best rapper alive since the best rapper retired.”
Lil Wayne’s musical career began at the tender age of 11, after meeting Cash Money Records’ owner and CEO Ronald “Slim” Brian. He cites Pimp Daddy and U.N.L.V (recording artists from Cash Money Records as well) as some of his early influences. After his encounter with Slim, Lil Wayne out of high school to fully pursue his dreams of becoming a rap artist. Another Cash Money executive, Baby Williams, signed him to Cash Money, where he has been ever since. Baby not only served as Lil Wayne’s musical mentor, but also as a father figure.
Weezy grew up with a stepfather who, like many young men from the inner city, owned a handgun which was unregistered. Lil Wayne accidentally shot himself whilst playing with it as a young child, and after waking up in hospital a few days later, pointed the authorities to the gun’s owner. His stepfather was ultimately arrested for owning the unregistered weapon and incarcerated. Unfortunately, after his release from the penitentiary, he was abducted and killed. In memory of his stepfather, Wayne got “In Memory Of Rabbit: It’s Up To Me” tattooed on his arm.
At age 14, in 1997, Lil Wayne formed the Hot Boyz along with fellow members Juvenile, Turk and B.G. They released the hugely successful album entitled “Get It How You Live”. The Hot Boyz instantly became famous in the south and midwest.
When he was 16, Weezy released “The Block Iz Hot” thereby launching his solo career. Four albums have followed ever since; Lights Out, 500 Degreez, That Carter, and That Carter II.
His latest offering was released on the 6th of December 2005 and it has already sold more than a million copies. With his rising popularity came a huge demand for his music in digital format. Nowadays people prefer using mp3 players as opposed to compact discs. They are smaller, easier to carry, and can store over a thousand songs in some cases.
Lil Wayne mp3’s are abundant on the Internet. If you know where to search, you can obtain free Lil Wayne Mp3 downloads. We all like the sound for free, don’t we ?

Music is the essence of communication. It connects us with worlds and emotions that are sometimes buried so deep within that we almost forget that they exist. Thanks to all the advancement of technology we can now explore all the interesting music genres right in our own homes. This convenience comes with great responsibility and most people lack the maturity to understanding that. To appreciate music you have to be willing to make a small investment for those that open up the portals of self-expression and communication.
The world of mp3 music is now an extended orchard, ripe and ready for the picking. The industry of downloading music illegally is now noticing that in order to get better quality with less guilt then legal download is the best way to go. The reasons are endless as to why you should opt for downloading mp3 music legally.
It is clear that society is not highly interested in paying much for anything, but often the asking price for legal music download is so little one can actually ridicule it. There are many sites that offer the download of mp3 music legally. These help provide an efficient service for people. The basic concept is that people can get their favorite music instantly by paying a very low fee. This type of fee can be per download or subscription. Besides being able to download the music legally you get the opportunity to read some of the reviews written about your favorite artists which can be quite interesting. Most start from as little as $1 per hit downloads. Sites like mp3.com, emusic.com, musicmatch.com and so forth help make this process as easy as taping a few keys.

The appeal with legal mp3 music download is that you know that you will be receiving the same quality as a store bought CD. But something that most music fans seem to understand and appreciate from the services provided by the legal mp3 music downloading sites is that it is a community. With people lacking so much in the respect for other people’s property it is good that most music downloading websites are doing their part in preserving a sense of honesty.

Led Zeppelin is the #1 Rock and Roll Band of All Time

Led Zeppelin is the #1 Rock and Roll Band of All Time
I’ve been in rock and roll all my life and I’m well aware that The Rolling Stones have been called the best rock and roll band. Don’t get me wrong because I love Mick and the Stones, and the Beatles were my major musical influence, but here’s why I think that Led Zeppelin is the best rock and roll band of all time:
1. BEST PLAYERS
First of all, John Bonham was the best rock and roll drummer ever to walk the face of this planet, and that’s an informed opinion coming from a former professional drummer. John played drums unlike anyone else ever did, still does, or ever will, and that fact is continually demonstrated in the astounding breadth and depth of his recorded work. He had complete independence in all four limbs, he slammed his drums harder than anyone else, and he did it with speed and total precision, never once dropping the beat. His beats were were innovative and creative, and John was never stuck in simple grooves. His fills were innovative, creative, complex, and technically brilliant, he knew when to keep it relatively simple (i.e. Kashmir), but he was always in the stratosphere of drumming. And to top that all off, John created a giant drum sound which is unique. It inspired a host of imitators who were able to imitate the sound of his snare drum, but only with a simple backbeat. At the time that Led Zep was formed, Jimmy Page could have gotten any drummer in the world to play with him, and he chose John. There’s not one single drummer alive or dead who can begin to touch John’s power, creativity, speed, precision, and technical brilliance. I’ve heard that Jimmy still feels the same way about John as I do.
Secondly, Jimmy Page has always been one of the best rock guitarists ever, right from his earliest days as a session player and the beginning of his real public stardom in the Yardbirds. I believe that Jimmy is the most brilliantly prolific of all the great rock and roll guitarists. I suspect that Jimmy would agree with me that Jimi Hendrix was the one true genius of guitar because he came from another galaxy in terms of his sound and his use of feedback. But unfortunately, Jimi died and we will never know how much further he would have progressed. When I listen to Jimmy’s solos using the violin bow, I get the urge to put him on the same pedestal as Hendrix and wonder which galaxy they both came from. As a songwriter, Jimmy used his superior ability to play lead guitar to create actual song structure. Led Zep’s songs use not one or two of Jimmy’s incredibly powerful, complicated and unbelievably SEXY riffs in each song, but there are four, five or more riffs in some songs. Jimmy’s riffs differ from each other within each song, and also from song to song. His lead guitar playing can be HARD and sexy, he can be sensitive and beautiful, and he can be technically brilliant, all in the very same song.
Thirdly, John Paul Jones is a bass player who attained a level of brilliance comparable to Paul McCartney. Just like McCartney, John could play beautiful “melodic” bass (i.e. “Ramble On”), he could play as fast as it gets, but he also knew when to keep it simple and just hold down the bottom although I think he was incapable of doing that without utter sophistication. No one at all can touch those two on bass, and John also played consistently brilliant keyboards – piano, organ and synthesizer. The intricate way in which he wove his bass guitar playing into, through, and underneath Jimmy’s guitar playing is nothing short of perfection itself.
And last but not at all least, Robert Plant had an incredibly high vocal range, emotionally as well as in terms of octaves. Just like Dylan was for his own music, Robert’s voice was perfect for Led Zep’s music and there’s no other singer who could possibly have fit in. As a professional singer, I’m knocked out by Robert’s vocals on both a technical and an emotional level. Robert understood the concept of using his voice like a musical instrument, creating fascinating sounds without using lyrics. And Robert co-wrote with Jimmy too. A lot of the time you can’t understand his lyrics and I’ve heard that was Robert’s intent because just like Mick Jagger, all he cared about at that time was that you connect with the emotion and the energy in the totality of the music. But when you can get the lyrics (like in Stairway to Heaven, their tribute to Janis Joplin), you find a great piece of poetry. And on top of all that, Robert had the best “oooh yeahs” in the business!
2. CREATIVE SONGWRITING
Hardly anybody has ever covered Led Zep songs for very good reasons. Their song structure is based on their vastly superior playing abilities and there’s no one who can actually play what they played. I’m talking about songs that are not based on simple chords like all other rock and roll is. Jimmy and Robert based their songs on Jimmy’s riffs and on his chordal tonalities that to this day stand alone as being unique. I’m also talking about length of songs that maintain a constant and intense high, up to 11 minutes in length without resorting to an overly repetitive chorus. I know from Robert’s solo work after Led Zep that he also uses unusual tonalities in his writing, but even without actually knowing this I would have to assume that due to Jimmy Page being an erupting fountain of brilliant guitar work, the majority of the non-vocal music creation came from Jimmy. The Beatles certainly deserve abject worship for John and Paul’s creative songwriting ability, no question about that. Certainly Mick and Keith wrote a slew of classic, historic and truly memorable rock songs, but the very nature of their comparatively simple rock and roll structure and basic similarity to each other in terms of using major and minor chord progressions, simple and basic rock and roll rhythms, and verse/chorus/bridge approach defines them as being less innovative when compared to Robert and Jimmy.
3. SUM TOTAL OF BRILLIANT WORK
Here they outdistance The Stones because most of the Stones’ albums have “fillers”, which are songs that do not hit the same intense high that got slammed in all their best ones. However, I’d like to say that I don’t think either Mick or Robert is capable of recording anything short of a brilliant vocal. The Beatles actually exceed Led Zep in terms of numbers of great albums that constitute a greater body of brilliant and uniquely innovative work that literally broke new musical ground with every single song they recorded. The Beatles were simply The Beatles, and they were the most creative rock and roll band ever, from being the best singers and songwriters ever right down to their individual charm and charisma. But without denigrating their gorgeous, sensitive and original style of playing, what they recorded is not the heavy type of rock and roll that either the Stones or Led Zep played. George, Paul and John were all brilliant and creative guitarists, but because they did not improvise on stage, they were not really master guitarists. I love and respect Ringo as both a person and as a very creative drummer who mastered the art of drum sounds. He has his own unmistakable Ringo style for both, but he’s not really a master drummer in the sense of being able to play with great speed and dexterity. I’m talking about 9 Led Zep albums chock full of brilliant and intensely high songs – I don’t know how many hours of great rock and roll listening that is. There’s not a single weak track among all that work, and there’s simply no question that they consistently broke new ground musically. Their debut album is still the best one of all time (including Cream’s), and Coda, their “swan song” is equally perfect.
4. STAGE PRESENCE
Led Zep was there when the concept of “rock and roll star” was still evolving. I will grant that the Stones at least deserve honorable mention as the best rock and roll band but it’s mostly because of their impressive touring record and Mick’s superstar stage presence with his ability to put on a great show every single time he appears. And he’s still doing it at age 60 for goodness sake! My point isn’t that Led Zep necessarily had the best stage presence, just that they did have a true rock star sexual aura.
I could go on about Jimmy Page’s abilities as a producer, and there are other aspects to their greatness like the length of time they were together without a change of band members. And the life they actually led as archtypical wild rock and roll bad boys equals the life led by the Rolling Stones in intensity, if not length. Both bands are perfect examples on an artistic level of what I call FORM = CONTENT, which in this case means that these two rock and roll bands personified the rock and roll life.
In conclusion, the above four categories do enough to fully qualify Led Zeppelin for my not-so-humble award. There will never be another rock and roll band to approach the stratospheric musical heights that Led Zep reached. The Recording Industry Association of America, who has the correct statistics, lists Led Zeppelin as the third best selling musical act/artist in history. The Beatles are first, with 166.5 million albums sold in the USA alone, Elvis is second with 117.5 million, and Led Zep is third with 106 million. I think it’s very significant that those statistics are becoming geometrically times greater than the number of albums that they sold during their performance lifetimes. What has happened and is happening is that the young people of today are discovering them in droves because they are coming of age sexually and they recognize and connect with the most powerful musical example of that sexual power. They are buying their CD’s, shirts, posters and other memorabilia. And frankly, I’m thrilled.

Leather Harmonica Cases Make Carrying Harps Safe and Convenient

Leather Harmonica Cases Make Carrying Harps Safe and Convenient
Although harmonics are traditionally associated with the blues and folk music, harps have long been played in music genres as varied as classical, rock, and even hip hop. The harmonica is the musical instrument for choice for many people both because of its portability and because you don’t have to learn to read music in order to learn to play the harp.
For players who like to carry their harmonicas with them, there are a variety of leather harmonica cases that serve to protect harps in style. Here are some of the most popular:
Harmonica Holster with Loop: Perfect for carrying in your pocket or in your luggage, the harmonica holster is backed with a leather loop for sliding onto your belt. These leather harmonica cases come in two sizes, and are made to carry either a 10-hole diatonic harp or a 12-hole chromatic harmonica. You can even attach multiple holsters to your belt if you want to carry more than one harmonica.
Multi-Slot Leather Harmonica Cases: If you want to carry several of your favorite 10-hole diatonic harps, a multi-slot case will fit your needs perfectly. These types of cases come in several different sizes, to hold varying numbers of harmonicas. A four-slot case will hold four harps, a six-slot will hold six harmonicas, and a twelve-slot will hold twelve harps. A unique feature of some multi-slot harmonica cases, like those made by Buckeye Leather or Pullman, is that you can wet the pouches in order to custom fit the case to your favorite 10-hole diatonic harps. They also feature a leather flap so that your harmonicas are completely covered.
Harmonica Waist Wraps: A harmonica waist wrap has two major advantages: you can slide your own pants belt through the slots at either end, making it a “one size fits all” leather harmonica case, and it’s open so you can easily access your harps. A waist wrap typically holds six harmonicas.
Harmonica Belts: If you don’t normally wear a belt, but want your harmonicas within easy reach, these leather harmonica belts offer the best of both worlds. Lined with Velcro, the ends are easy to adjust, as well as to put on and take off. Harmonica belts are typically offered in three sizes, and fit waists from 28 inches to 44 inches.
Combination Straps: If you play a stringed instrument as well as the harp, combination straps are perfect. Typically, these are adjustable leather guitar straps, banjo straps, and mandolin straps that have four pockets for harmonicas.
Briefcases: Although harmonica briefcases aren’t typically made from leather, they do come in handy for professional harp players who need to transport a dozen or so of their harmonicas to gigs.
The best leather harmonica cases are made from leather tanned in the U.S. and then cut, formed, and buffed by hand. Over time, the leather softens and almost becomes an extension of your harp – or at least a comfortable home for those times when you’re not playing it.

Learning the Basics of the Guitar

Learning the Basics of the Guitar

You can buy either a second hand guitar or a brand new one, depending on whichever you think will suit you best.
Once you have bought yourself a guitar, you can actually start taking beginner lessons. Beginner lessons are guitar classes taught to newcomers so they are familiar with the basics of the guitar and how to play it. The first thing you will be taught is not how to play the instrument, but what the different parts of the guitar are.
All websites providing online beginner guitar lessons start their teachings from this point. This makes sense because it is not a good idea to learn a musical instrument without first knowing its various parts. Along with knowing each part of the guitar, you also have to learn the functions of each individual part. Knowing the different parts of the guitar and their functions familiarizes you with the instrument.
Basic Steps to Beginner Guitar Lessons
After teaching you the different parts of the guitar and their functions, the next thing beginner guitar lessons teach you are the names of the different strings on the guitar. Did you know that all guitars do not necessarily have the standard six strings? There are guitars that have twelve strings too!
After learning about the strings, the next step is to learn the different ways you can play the guitar. How many postures can you think of, in which to play the guitar? While you can be imaginative and think up numerous postures, the basic postures are standing up, and sitting down!
Learning about the postures also teaches you the different grips you can use to hold the guitar while playing. Once you are through with these basics, the next thing that you learn in beginner guitar lessons is actually how to use the guitar. This includes how to form the different chords, how to hit the strings such that you get the proper sound, etc.
Beginner Guitar Lessons – The Importance of Guitar Theory
There is one school of thought that emphasizes the need to know guitar theory while taking beginner guitar lessons. The logic for this is simple: once you know the basic theory, it becomes easier to learn the chords. However, this is not a mandatory practice; in fact, many online guitar tutorials do away with the need for knowledge of guitar theory as a prerequisite for learning the chords and other complex things about the guitar.
Basically, the need for guitar theory knowledge depends primarily on your level of interest in the instrument. If you are planning to take up playing the guitar full-time, it makes sense to know the theoretical aspects as well. However, if you are taking it up as just something you want to learn so you can play some of your favorite numbers, then it makes sense to just go ahead with the online tutorials alone and learn the different chords.
Now that you have a solid game plan, it’s time for you to get out there and start taking your own beginner guitar lessons!

Learning To Play Piano Chords

Learning To Play Piano Chords

If you are playing several notes at the same time, then you are playing piano chords. Simply put, when multiple notes are played together, piano chords are achieved. The chords then come together to form a melody. Every song that you hear has a melody and it is through each melody that music is achieved. Sound complicated? Well, that’s ok because it really isn’t as difficult as it sounds.
As a musician, whether it be professional or hobbyist, you will need to learn the various types of piano chords. The more that you understand about piano chords, the more variety you will have when playing. If you want to write your own music, you not only need an ear for tunes, but also the understanding of how to make them come together. A good instructor will introduce you to piano chords during lessons.
If you already have some experience, but simply want a better understanding of advanced piano chords, discuss these options with a private tutor or music teacher. By gaining an understanding of what sounds good and what doesn’t, you will have the undeniable edge over other budding musicians.
Every piano has 88 keys and while it may seem intimidating to learn piano chords, it actually comes down to memory. When typing on the computer, you know which keys to press in order to make a lowercase letters change to uppercase, right? By studying piano chords, you will begin to understand which keys to press at the same time in order to play a chord. During your introduction to learning piano, an instructor will cover some of the basic chords and you will come to know their sound when you hear them. After enough practice, you will be able to immediately identify piano chords by ear.
There are several other ways to help in your learning of piano chords, including instructional books, tutorials and videos. In the beginning, it may even help to label the keys until you have a better understanding of each of their unique sounds. As you progress in your learning, you can remove the identification labels and play using any arrangement of sheet music. Learning to identify notes will play a large part in your understanding of piano chords. As you move through your studies, you will learn all of the terminology associated with piano playing and the definition of each.
Learning piano chords is a very important part of the process, but it does require a certain degree of patience. Always remember that time will lessen the difficulty and, before you know it, you will be playing and identifying piano chords by ear. While it may seem intimidating at first, you will soon begin to notice the ease of playing piano chords will come naturally. Happy tunes!

Music and politics, today?!

Music and politics, today?!

Jerome Camal, French of birth, is assistant to the Washington University of Saint Louis in jazz studies, musicologia and etnomusicologia. But it is also a saxophonist that is not satisfied with to live of academic searches and he/she doesn’t want that teacher calls him/it, but he prefers to play in the places, to plunge himself/herself/themselves in jam sessions and to teach the practice of the tool.
A stimulating character, that entertains in his/her home page a section devoted in full to the analysis of the political jazz of the sixties.
The observations of Camal are stimulating, ideologically you direct not, also succeeding at the same time to recover important figures of that season, giving them a correct position (is worth on all the examples of Frank Kofsky and Amiri Baraka, today a little considered, in kind the first one).
Camal quotes them, he/she criticizes them. I mark that their ideas “strong” on the jazz they maintain intact their charm, to distance of years.
The studies on the jazz, more and more serious and philologically correct, you/they are receiving spaces ever had before. There are authors that bring forth innovative thesis and different readings from those usual, for instance the wise man Paul’s Gilroy Black Atlantic, teacher of Black studies to the university of Yale, that offers a reading that has the breath of the historical-political-geographical fresco.
From the correspondence by e-mail this interview was born, that besides opinions not discounted on Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, it furnishes a list at the end – also it everything anything else other than banal – of music jazz “politics.”
Frank Bergoglio: In your pages on the jazz and the movement for the civil rights, or when you speak of the jazz of the so-called one “black nationalism”, it is frequent to find the name and the work of Frank Kofsky. Which opinion have you matured of his/her job after having studied him/it to fund? Do you think that it introduced too ideology in relationship to the treated matters or that, contrarily, the period both well described in the writings of Kofsky and Amiri Baraka?
Jerome Camal: Kofsky is an interesting character. Indeed ideology envelops its writings in so mighty way to make more its reasonings object objections. An example of this attitude is its interview to Coltrane in which him test, without succeeding us to make to guarantee from Coltrane its political ideas. (To read the interview in language English: http://www.geocities.com/a_habib/Jazz/coltrane.html).
Nevertheless, some points of its discourse are faced in interesting way and they gather meaningful aspects: the most effective example is the description of the economic conditions in which you/they have to work the black musicians. His/her book Black Nationalism in Music, is probably at the end more profit if read as a primary source, which the ideology that informs a part of the musicians of the Avant Garde reflects.
F.B: Secondo me Amiri Baraka is more sociologist in the analyses, is Kofsky a researcher anymore “political” of the jazz…Penso that its intention was to put its studies the method of Marxist analysis into practice, doesn’t it seem you?
J.C.: I Arrange, but I think that we should think to both as about two researchers moved by strong political motivations. And’ past a beautiful po’ of time from my reading of “Blues People”, but, as memory, Baraka seems me it emphasized the African-American culture as the product and the reaction towards the slavery and in equal time as connection to Africa. The matters of Baraka are based on a vision “of class”, probably influenced from the Marxism and to lines bordering with the existentialism. For him the forms of jazz and blues that have had more commercial success they have been corrupt from the white mainstream. Reading him/it does him the idea that he thinks that assimilation is a form of corruption; what the bebop is a reaffirmation of the inheritance of the black roots in music and a taking of distance from the white hegemony that was consolidated during the Swing Era. Many groups and artists of the movement coagulated him around the African-American arts, the reasonings of Baraka they resounded. Of other song the writer of color Ralph Ellison was in strong disagreement with the theses of Baraka and looked at the blues as to a form of celebration of the results reached by the African-American art. In the demonstrations as the blues, where Baraka has the tendency to see the people of color as victims, Ellison underlines the strong sense of representation and affiliation instead of it.
F.B.: Which opinion you are you formed on the course to assign to the job of Coltrane? Before you quoted one famous interview of his, and in that as in others, the timidity of the saxophonist emerges, always of few words, that it brings to reserved answers, humble and at the end ambiguous in comparison to the course of the legacy coltraniano.
J.C.: I Think that the case of Coltrane to treat we need to consider his/her music from two separated visual angles. Primo: which type of political message (if it is one of them) it foresaw Coltrane for his/her music? According to: which done mean political you/he/she has been tied up to his/her music to back, from the most different listeners? In other words, I believe there is a difference among as Coltrane it conceived and he/she saw his/her music and the way in which it has been recepita and interpreted. Premised this, I see a Coltrane that “it uses” his/her music to communicate a message of integration and universality. I like to show up a parallel among his/her interest for the modal music and particularly for that Indian and the attention of Martin Luther King for the fliosofia of the not-violence brought ahead by Ghandi. In the first days of the struggle for the civil rights of the black population often M.L. King painted a parallel among the struggle for the liberty in the United States and the movement for the independence in Africa. It seems me to be able to affirm that both the men saw their job in universal terms. Nevertheless it doesn’t seem me that the music of John Coltrane has been welcomed in this way and some of the most radical parties in the Movement of the civil rights they were rapid in to summon to them the saxophonist as musical spokesman. Same Coltrane to the idea doesn’t appear enthusiastic, as it clearly enough shows his/her interview to Kofsky, where he prefers to deepen his/her musical explanations with a more general meaning regarding the human condition. As it underlines Craig Werner, Coltrane and Malcom X they saw both their transformed message and used for justifying the pursuit of more radical objectives inside the Movement, independently from the fact that they wanted you/he/she was used and interpreted their job in such way or no.
F.B.: you Think there is a connection among the New it damages American and the jazz? And of what type?
J.C.: And’ an ample question too much for a rapid answer. I have never reasoned on the connection among New Left and music, even if it seems an interesting matter to develop.
F.B.: you want to make a brief list of political passages that in the history of the jazz you consider fundamental and to give apiece us a brief comment?
J.C.: You my first choice is rather obvious: We insist! Freedom now Suite (Candid 1961). This recording exemplifies for many different aspects as the music you/he/she can politically be used. In first place it is an example of artists of color that you/they use their art to regain the authority and the control on his/her own history and on his/her narration storiografica. The Suite of Roach follows the story of the population of color of African descent is in the United States that in Africa, departing from the experience of the slavery, continuing with the declaration of emancipation, to end with the struggle for right peers in America as in Africa. Facing the matter from this point of view is stimulating to observe, as they makes Scott Saul and Ingrid Monson, that the order of the sections of the Suite, separate among them, you/he/she has been changed in comparison to the ideas of departure of Roach and Oscar Brown Jr. Originally the suite foresaw the departure with the African section before moving to the experience of the slavery and to pass to the emancipation. to Put the slavery to the beginning serves to strongly take root the African-American history to the experience of the slavery. To depart with Africa would have emphasized the African inheritance of the African-American culture instead. In beaten second the Freedom now Suite represents well also what Gilroy it defines “black atlantic”. All Africa melts the American jazz with the Cuban music and the African percussions: it deals with an excellent example of the continuous cultural exchange that is had among African people, people of the Caribbean, wide also in Europe and, naturally, to the United States. From last it needs to remember that the Suite is after all a great moment of music, in which you/they can be seen used advanced techniques of composition. Max Roach uses a 5/4, perhaps an answer to the success of Take Five, but more disposition and brave of that of Brubeck. The tone of the breaths, perfectly in the “fourth” in Driva men is interesting and anticipates the times. The photo of cover that shows some students during a sit-in to a counter of a cafeteria it is provocative and the notes of cover of Nat Hentoff they are also candid and fresh to the actual reading. The second example is surely less known. In fact if you/he/she has been written a lot on the Freedom Suite of Sonny Rollins, I would aim the attention at a 1956 recording, The house The live in, performed for the Prestige. It deals with a passage hard enough conventional bop, but it is also a big beautiful example of signifying in music. At the end of the piece Rollins inserts as tail the theme of Lift every voice and sing. That spiritual has become subsequently a kind of non official hymn for the population of color. In the notes of cover of the cd-playpen of the Prestige, container everything how much recorded, he explains that the saxophonist appreciated the social meaning of the text written by Robinson and wanted to strengthen his/her words ending the song with Lift every voice and sing. He perhaps wanted also to answer to the recent recording of that song performed by Frank Sinatra. In every case it is interesting to notice that this is the only song of that session that has not immediately been realized by the Prestige, immediately after the recording. I have not made a lot of searches on this disk, but I think both too often ignored, today. If then we want a complete list of passages we should include at least the Haitian fight song and Fable of Faubus of Mingus and Freedom rider of Art Blakey, John’s Coltrane Alabama, the whole apparition of Archie Shepp to the festival jazz of Newport and Appointment in Ghana of Jackie Mclean. There is then Strange Fruit of Billie Holiday, but the list would be very long…

Learning Piano Without Years of Lessons!

Learning Piano Without Years of Lessons!
So, you want to learn the piano. But you don’t want to spend years learning how to read music.
That’s understandable. Learning piano doesn’t have to be the hard chore so many believe it to be. In fact, it can be quite easy IF YOU START BY LEARNING CHORDS!
For example, in the lesson “Reflections in Water,” available below, we have four chords and a scale to create music with. We don’t need to read music and we don’t need piano tabs either. All we need is to learn how to finger one chord position and play the C Major scale. Then we can use these materials to create music with.
Learning piano this way is infinitely easier (and more rewarding!) than learning how to note read because we create it ourselves!
Once we have the chords under our fingers, we can explore the piano in a way that may never have been possible for you before. Many piano students don’t believe they have talent or skill to improvise but this is simply not true. All that is required is the desire to try it. Once students jump in the water, they can’t wait to take a swim and then they’re hooked!
Learning piano without years of lessons is not difficult. All it takes is the ability to learn a few chords and then experiment with them.
Now, if learning classical repertoire is your goal, then of course you’re going to have to learn how to read music. But reading music is not necessary in order to play the piano. Learning chords is!

Music and mix

Music and mix
Music has always been a rhythmic companion of our lives. People are born with music, study, drive, eat, sleep and dream to music. People even spend more money on music as compared to books.
Music is everywhere when a person talks to avoid silence and some leave a television or radio on in the background or even sing, hymn or whistle. Thus, music is important for the success in live training. We are able to easily make some connection when we view a picture and hear music at the same time. Powerful brain connections occur when music is combined with information.
One who learns something with the music is able to learn and remember much faster.
It is sound that wins
The first silent movies used to last for a minute or two which were immediate and short lived sensations. Absolute silence of voice and music proved as a deadly combination. Thereafter, theatre owners hired musicians on payroll. They told the musicians to play something or anything and when they did, it worked. Music became effective for solving problems as told by the film critics.
Later, radio found itself threatened by television because they feared that combined audio and video signals of TV will bring them out of the business. When there was a choice between a radio and television, they favored television but patronized radio. Sound or talkies destroyed silent movies and thus music won at last.
Again home video games started with visual signals but within short period of time video games with full fledged background sound evolved which again backed the soundless video games.
Music mix
In live training, music is the most preferable weapon and therefore when music is properly inserted into training environment it can lift some cold, lifeless qualities of a typical training. Other uses of music provide cover for silent activities and small group discussions.

Music : The Source, The Life Force

Music : The Source, The Life Force
Since humans first walked this Earth we have been banging inanimate objects and noticing tonal harmonies in all that we do. Music evokes such a deep rooted emotion in us, connecting with our inner being on an infinite number of levels.
From the depths of depression to the awesome high of life itself there is a music which can touch us in a profound manner at every single step of the way.
Someone once said to me “I don’t like music” … I simply couldn’t fathom this concept of actually not liking music. I could obviously see how one could dislike a certain type of music but to not like any music at all was a totally alien idea to me.
I was lucky I suppose, growing up, I was privy to the tastes of my “60’s generation” parents and all that hippy stuff, along with a fine selection of very early blues, reggae, jazz and some really raw grooves which have all but been lost to our super fickle modern generation. In fact my Father owned one of the first copies of the first 45 from a label named Chess. Worth a fortune now no doubt. Music has always been a big part of my life.
So why does music reach us at this most basic level? What is it about the human being that makes us crave this “soul food”? Well, music is a multifaceted means of communication. It is possible through music to create all the acoustic features that we use in our everyday language. Furthermore, these acoustic features can be generated in a very definite way. This makes it possible for composers to reach us at our most primeval state, simply by structuring the music according to predefined patterns.
The most basic musical element that we respond to is a rhythmical beat or pulse. If you need proof of this then notice how a newborn baby will begin to rock or move to the beat without prompting. This is the human instinct naturally reacting to a rhythm, the roots of which are deeply imbedded in all of us. This is the case whether you like music or not.
The next level of musical recognition is the conscious awareness of the interval between certain vibrations or frequencies. In other words the musical scale. It was not long before humans realized that certain notes work together and certain notes do not – harmonious sequences and discordant sounds.
In fact, not all that long ago a discordant sound was associated with the work of the devil because it made the listener feel quite uncomfortable. These days we have moved on with many modern jazz musicians purposefully using discordant sounds – something which horrifies the purists.
One level up from the musical scale is the combination of many different types of musical instrument. This is what we know today as pop music, orchestral music and many other genres. It pleases us when we hear harmonious combinations of many different types of instrument. These chords and harmonious sequences connect with us at our most basic level. It is these musical progressions which can evoke such strong emotions in all of us.
To this day, there are no generally accepted definitions of this musical complexity at a logical and objective level. Many people report that when they hear a piece of music they really like and which touches them emotionally they will feel the hairs on their arms stand on end. This is hardly a scientific observation but is one of the only indicators we have telling us when somebody is emotionally moved by piece of music.
To be perfectly honest, maybe the scientists should just leave it alone – I believe some things were not meant to be explained. Music is music and it makes us feel the way we do because of some ancient connection handed down from generation to generation. The best thing to do with music is just enjoy it!
Without music the world would indeed be a very dull place.

Music

Music – A pure joy
Music has been an inevitable part of our day to day life. Be it the chirping of birds, babbling of babies or the rhythm of nature you will find music everywhere. When you listen and hear sweet music tunes you are left behind with the weaving magic of one of its kind.
It is around 50,000 years back that music has evolved and now it seems to be an integral part of our body and soul. Music plays a great role in our lives:
1. It has been found in a research that children listening to music are more likely to become engineers, doctors and computer professionals because of the fact that music learning develops certain important areas of the brain responsible for reasoning and language. Therefore, it is also known for sharpening memory of an individual.
2. A child who has taken birth from the womb of a mother who had listened music is much intelligent than others.
3. Music is used widely in many therapeutic purposes so as to heal mental problems and other learning disabilities in a person. It also heals diseases such as hypertension, brain trauma and provides relaxation during stress.
4. It teaches a person how to coordinate, self express himself, work in a team, and follow discipline.
5. Even plants are known to thrive towards music as they too respond to sound in the same way as a human does.
6. Music brings a devotee closer to his god and this is the reason why religious hymns lifts up heaviness of the mind and frees the soul.
7. It is also used for meditative properties used for training, healing, exercising and releasing tensions.
8. People perform better when music is played because it erases the mental tension and introduces lightness in the body.
9. Music and songs have always captured feelings, passions, agony, and distress more efficiently during love and romance.
10. It is also used by scientists to map behavior and functions of the human mind.
Classical music is known to soothe and open the channels of the mind whereas rock music sets your pulses to racing and chants can send you to trace. The future of music business has also taken manifolds in the recent times due to these advantages. Music has different effects upon various human beings depending upon the use.

Music is said to be the food of the soul. There is nothing more swaying and gratifying than good music. Soothing music heals the mind. Entertainment will not get completed without music and playing of your favorite music and songs changes your tension filled mind right away to a more relaxed and tranquil state of mind. If you compose a piece of really nice music you need to write it down so that you can remember and other people will also be able to play it too. Live music is favored at parties and events. Live music entertainment consists of classical music, Jazz, Swing, World music, period music of 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and the 90’s and performed by artists who haven’t made it big and classical music consists of quintet, quartet, trio, duo and solo.
Whether it is a birthday party, wedding reception, a private party or a corporate party, live music is a must if you are not hiring a DJ to mix songs for you. The choice of songs and music may be limited with a live music performance, but it is the limited selected songs and music, which makes the band endearing to people. DJs would charge 25% – 50% of what a live music performing band charges. However, the charm of live music is something that is enticing if one can afford it. Some live music performing bands capture and reproduce the tone of music that were not recorded properly by the ingenuous recording machines of the 50‘s and the 60’s. Performances of live music can be known on any instrument as a piano, guitar, keyboard, harpoon, flute, trumpet, saxophone and the jazz set.
Music is intimately related to the subliminal mind because it blends our emotions. Perhaps you can recall listening to a jingle and finding the tune and the advertising slogan replaying in your mind over and over, even if you disliked the jingle. It just trapped into your mind. Hypnosis is another prevailing trait of music. One of the main reasons for using music for self-hypnosis is to help you maintain mental and emotional focus on your outcome. The music that helps to elicit within you emotions which are appropriate for your self-hypnosis outcome, will take care of the focus. Your intention can then ride of the wave of music, making focusing an effortless process.
Benefits:
Music has quite a lot of advantages despite serious reductions in subsidy for arts programs in public schools, there is a great need for studying music. Band, orchestra, and choir all offer students a chance to work together in a social and intellectual group setting and excel at complex tasks. The deception for parents is to enroll their children in high quality programs and aid them in procuring high quality instruments.

Music: An International Language

Music: An International Language

I want to give you a challenge. Find me a country that does not have music of some kind. Search anywhere you like. Explore the jungles of South America, make your way through African tribes, or discover the peoples of South Asia. No matter where you visit I guarentee you this: every country will, without doubt, have some form of music. Their people will make music, play music, and move to music.
From California to China, people love music. There is something about music that is core to humanity. What makes a little baby respond to the soft humming of its mother? Or what makes an old woman on the streets of India turn to the sound of a drum? Music is truly a language that is spoken by every person on the earth.
There are many reasons that people love the sound of good music. Music moves us. There is something about the beat of a drum or the rhythm of an orchestra that can cause people of all ages to stand to their feet and move. We are so affected by sound, and when that sound is pleasing to us it forces a response. That response can be the simple clapping of hands or it can be the dancing of our entire bodies.
People all around the world also love music because it is beautiful. There is nothing more amazing then going to an opera or than seeing a symphony orchestra perform. Even the sounds of our favorite album playing in our car remind us that when we hear music, we are encountering some element of sheer beauty. We cannot quite define why music sounds beautiful to our ears, but I have yet to meet a person who does not like one kind of music or another.
That is another great thing about music: it is diverse. You can love classical music, country music, or rock and roll music. Some people prefer music with only a simple melody while others enjoy music with many complicated notes and sounds. What is beautiful to one person may not be called beautiful to another. And that is a beautiful thing.
Music connects people to events and helps them to remember some of life’s most significant events. I’ll bet you remember the first song you and your spouse danced to, and I bet you can name the song that played the first time you drove a car by yourself. Music is great that way. We can define entire seasons of our life based on the kind of music that we enjoyed during that time. Every one has been with a parent when an “oldies” song comes on the radio and the parent begins singing out the lines of the song, remembering with fondess their younger years.
From Africa to Alabama to Argentina, music is an important element of culture. By it we define people and countries. Sometimes we enjoy the style, sometimes we would rather not hear it, but most of the time we all agree that music is a wonderful thing. Our lives would be very different and our world a less unified place if we didn’t have music.

Music; An Enjoyable Necessity

Music; An Enjoyable Necessity
It’s a safe bet that, since the arrival of cognitive human beings on this earth, music has, in some form had a significant effect on their lives. The first sounds, other than speech, were probably produced by hitting something; wood, stone or hide; and ancient peoples must have appreciated the sounds of the world around them; of water, weather and animals; and were the sounds of a rippling stream or a gushing waterfall music to their ears? And when they stood at the seashore did the crashing waves and the suck of the tides move them in some way?
There is something deep within our psyche, which reacts and ‘remembers’ music. It is more than probable that sounds relating to music and rhythm came long before sounds relating to communication and speech. Today, this theory can be tested by noting a baby’s reaction to a lullaby as compared to speech. If you’re lucky, humming can soothe the most fractious child and even send them to sleep! Music, in the form of rhythm was used by many peoples as a way of sending messages to out of sight recipients; consider the jungle drums of Africa or the Alpine horn, the Aboriginal didgeridoo or the use of bells as a warning of attack.
The days of learning our lessons by rote have, mostly, disappeared. This is because it has, rightly, been recognised that we don’t necessarily absorb the content of what we repeat over and over again. But, as an aid to memory, music still has its uses. Songs we have learnt in childhood can be recalled far later in life than mere words. Music is a well known and much used therapy in illnesses that involve memory loss; Stroke, Alzheimers etc; and not only as a recall aid but also as a re-learning tool. Speech therapists use music extensively when trying to teach stroke victims how to speak again. The rhythm and melody of a familiar tune will often ‘trigger’ a positive response, when no amount of visual stimuli has an effect.
And then there is the cohesive quality of music; from the singing of a country’s National Anthem to a football crowds chant; from carol singers to brass bands. Musical participation has been used in every walk of life. The chain gangs of America’s Deep South would use music to get through the day and establish a rhythm to mundane physical labour. Sailors would pull a hawser or ’sheet’ in unison while singing a familiar ‘hornpipe’ or reel; The wonderful gospel sounds that poured from the wooden churches of the Southern states black population were a potent community tool to promote and celebrate their culture; a lucky offshoot was the inspiration of much of our modern rhythm and blues. Nowadays factories all over the world use ‘piped’ music to soothe the workers; if you’re doing a humdrum task music can make the time go faster.
When we think about it music is not just a pleasant pastime that is either passively listened to or actively produced. It has a much deeper, more fundamental purpose. Our reactions to outside events can be completely altered by music. It can make us happy, sad, frightened, elated, thoughtful . . . the list of emotions it engenders are as long as their number. And words are not necessary to create this ambience; for instance, how would silent movies have worked without the music? Those Keystone Cops without the frenetic piano plinkity plonk; the doe eyed heroines without the sobbing strings; the huge sweeping epics without full orchestral back up? They just wouldn’t have worked. Nowadays, with the proliferation of world music, we listen to and enjoy music in many different languages, without necessarily understanding a word the singers say; much as opera was once listened to as the fashionable ‘world’ music of its day; just another example of the emotive power of music.
So, it’s fair to say that music has an innate basis in our evolutionary makeup. We have probably used it since homo sapiens first walked the earth. Other animals do use sounds in their day to day living (frogs croak, dogs howl, sheep bleat etc.) but, with the possible exception of birds, we are the only species to enjoy making melody out of sound. We’ve utilised every viable tool, from the human voice to electronic tones, to create ever more varied compositions. Wouldn’t it be intriguing to discover how soon into our evolution the power and beauty of the human voice was appreciated? As the centuries have passed musicians have been, rightly, feted for their skill to move us with song, melody and rhythm. Once musicians were revered as priests, interpreting the sounds of the gods. Nowadays we are more pragmatic; but we still need that harmony in our lives; even if it’s only our mobile phone ringtone!

Music Business Past vs. Present

Music Business Past vs. Present
In the past, the music business was controlled by the major record labels. The record labels controlled everything in an artist’s career from start to finish. The record label would control and artist image, airplay, access to audits, likeness, royalty rate, success and everything in between while under the record label contract. When the artist career was over, the artist often didn’t have anything to show for their hard work and creativity.
Back in the day, the record label would finance artist’s project up front in the form of an advance. The advance usually amounted to a loan which the artist had to repay. The record label would finance the recording, distribution and promotion of the artist project and then “recoup” the money after the project started selling. Although it seems fair on the surface, the record label would charge the artist for much more than what the record label provided. The record label would not only bill the artist for the things mentioned above, but they would deduct artist royalties for damaged goods, record club discounts and a wealth of other expenses. In addition the record label would take these deductions from the artists’ gross earnings.
Although the record label would allow an artist to audit the record company’s books, many artists didn’t conduct any audits. Artists were generally afraid of angering the record labels by asking the record labels to show the expenses and deductions in writing. This justifiable fear kept artist’s in their place – under the record labels’ control.
Today with digital technology, the power is shifting into the hands of the artist
There’s a new trend in the music business that has record labels sweating in the boardroom. This new trend is called “Do It Yourself” (D.I.Y.). With Digital Technology anyone can start a record label and have a personal studio on their computer. There are a number of free or (very inexpensive) studio recording software applications that allow an artist to record and distribute their own material without the help or control of any other record label.
An artist can easily promote and sell their CD’s and MP3’s online at thousands of internet sites. In addition there are many new web hosting services that allow an artist to have a website dedicated to promoting their and selling their music to the growing online community.
There are hundreds of artists making a living selling their music online. Think about it, if you sold 20,000 CD’s online at $10, you’d earn $200,000. If you sold 20,000 for a record label you’d be in debt and you’d face the risk of being dropped from the record label.
By recording, distributing, promoting and selling your music yourself, you control your destiny. Today an artist can control their expenses, track their deductions and not live in fear of any record company.
Today the power is in the artist hand of the artist’s.

New Music Billboard

New Music Billboard allows the public to listen to music for free from their favorite Indie Artist. Traditional Billboards cover mostly mainstream music, but New Music Billboards features new and up and coming Singers and Bands.
New Music Billboards features music that runs along side more mainstream or commercial music and has frequently used the term Indie music. Small labels or individuals marketing their own music often participate in the Indie Music scene. It is important to uncover unknown bands because there is so much music talent out there who simply lack ample marketing.
During the 1990s, Indie music became widespread and answered an increasingly larger market of people who were looking for alternatives to the mainstream music institutions. In the same way that “alternative” was used before it became an actual genre of mainstream music, Indie is sometimes used in place of “underground” as a term to describe music.
There are many places online where you can download Indie music for free. One of the better resources is our site at New Music Billboard.com
Becoming involved in the Indie music scene typically, and sometimes still does, require one to move to a city or town where there’s an active Indie music scene. Traditionally, hooking up with other artists and fans was a way to build your career as a new artist.
Seasoned musicians and new artists now have the opportunity to record and publish their music from the comfort of their own studio. Income can be made from building a fan base and by selling merchandise, concert tickets and traditional CDs.
Some Indie groups are now picked up by Indie record labels or even major record labels. A good resource to find Indie Music Labels is New Music Label.com
While Indie music is still considered off from mainstream music scene, it is a place where new artists can build a fan base and begin many of the marketing components that they are going to need to be success in the longer term.

Music Artist Seal Bio

Music Artist Seal Bio
Although Seal earliest material still showed signs of acid house, by the mid-’90s he had created a distinctive fusion of soul, folk, pop, dance, and rock that brought him success on both sides of the Atlantic.
The son of Nigerian and Brazilian parents, Seal was raised in England and after graduating with an architectural degree, he took various jobs around London , including electrical engineering and designing leather clothing. After a while, he began singing in local clubs and bars and he joined an English funk band called Push, touring Japan with the band in the mid-’80s. When Seal was in Asia, he joined a Thailand-based blues band and after only a short time with that group, he traveled throughout India on his own.
Upon returning to England , Seal met Adamski, a house and techno producer who had yet to make much of an impression within the U.K. When they came together Seal provided the lyrics and vocals for Adamski’s “Killer,” which became a number one hit in 1990. Music Artist Fiona Apple Bio

Music Artist Fiona Apple Bio
Fiona’s break into the music industry came when a friend, who babysat for a record executive, handed her employer a demo. Fiona’s rich contralto voice, piano skills and lyrics got the attention of Sony Music executive Andy Slater, who signed her to a record deal.
In 1996 Fiona’s debut album, Tidal, was released by a subsidiary of Sony. The album was hugely successful, going on to sell 2.7 million copies and it was certified three times platinum in the U.S. “Criminal”, the fourth single, became Fiona’s breakthrough hit. The song reached the top forty on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and garnered a great deal of attention, in part because of the controversial Mark Romanek-directed music video.
In 1999 Fiona’s second album, When the Pawn…, was released. Its full title is When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He’ll Win the Whole Thing Fore He Enters the Ring There’s No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You’ll Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won’t Matter, Cuz You Know That You’re Right. The title is a poem Fiona wrote after reading the readers’ letters that appeared in Spin after an article had cast her in a negative light in an earlier issue. The title’s length earned it a spot in the Guinness Book of Records.
When the Pawn… used more expressive lyrics, experimented more with drum loops but it did not fare as well commercially as her debut. The album did go on to become RIAA-certified gold and it sold 920,000 copies in the U.S. The album’s lead single, “Fast as You Can”, reached the top twenty on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart and became Fiona’s first top forty hit in the UK .
Fiona sang with Johnny Cash on a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge over Troubled Water” that ended up on Cash’s album American IV: The Man Comes Around and ended up being nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Country Collaboration with Vocals”.
Fiona’s third album, Extraordinary Machine, was submitted to Sony executives in May 2003. Sony was reportedly unenthusiastic about the finished product, and the project was shelved for over two years. In 2004 and 2005 tracks were leaked on the Internet and played on U.S. and international radio; subsequently, MP3s of the entire album went online. A fan-led campaign, Free Fiona, was launched in support of the album’s official release.
In August 2005 the album was given a release date for October. Extraordinary Machine became the highest-charting album of Apple’s career in the U.S. on its release (debuting at number seven) and was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Pop Vocal Album”. It was eventually certified gold and sold 462,000 copies in the U.S. , though its singles failed to enter any Billboard charts.
Fiona went on a live tour to promote the album in late 2005, and from early 2006 supported Coldplay on their tour of North America .
Fiona recorded a cover of “Sally’s Song” for the special edition release of the soundtrack, released in 2006, for the Tim Burton-produced film The Nightmare Before Christmas. In May 2006 Apple paid tribute to Elvis Costello on VH1’s concert series Decades Rock Live by performing Costello’s hit “I Want You”; her version was subsequently released as a digital single.
Fiona is scheduled to tour through the U.S. with the band Nickel Creek in mid-2007, after which she will begin studio work on her fourth studio album. Fiona Apple will be going on tour soon and it is suggested that you buy Fiona Apple concert tickets from a ticket broker like BarrysTickets.com to get premium seats.

Music Artist Dave Matthews Band Bio

Music Artist Dave Matthews Band Bio
The Dave Matthews band is made up of Matthews, Stefan Lessard, Leroi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, and Carter Beauford. The group is best known for the unmistakable sound that is a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Dave Matthews built up a strong word-of-mouth following in the early ’90s by touring the country constantly, concentrating on college campuses.
In addition to amassing a sizable following, their self-released album, Remember Two Things, sold well for an independent release, and soon, they were attracting the attention of major labels. Quickly after the release of their independent album, The Dave Matthews Band signed with RCA and they released their major-label debut, Under the Table & Dreaming, in the fall of 1994. By spring of 1995, the record had launched the hit single “What Would You Say” and sold over a million copies.
A year-and-a-half after the release of Under the Table & Dreaming, the record had sold over four million copies in the U.S. alone. In April of 1996, the Dave Matthews Band released Crash, which entered the charts at #2 and quickly went platinum. Throughout 1996, the group toured behind Crash, sending it to double-platinum status. Also in 1996, Dave Matthews launched an attack on bootleggers in conjunction with the Federal Government, targeting stores that were selling semi-legal discs of live performances. The efforts of Matthews, his band, and his management resulted in an unprecedented crackdown on bootleggers in early 1997 — with nearly all of the major foreign bootlegging companies placed under arrest by the United States .
To further combat the bootleggers, Dave Matthews released an official double-disc live album, Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95, in the fall of 1997. It was an unexpected success, debuting at #3 on the charts and selling a million copies within the first five months of its release. The live record paved the way for the April 1998 release of Before These Crowded Streets, the group’s most ambitious album to date.
Another live effort, Listener Supported, followed a year later. Summer tours also packed the late ’90s, with sold-out shows across the U.S. The new millennium, however, saw the band back in the studio with Glen Ballard to record its fourth studio album — Everyday, released in February 2001. Although popular, it was overshadowed by rumors of a darker album recorded with Steve Lillywhite in 2000 but ultimately rejected. The band did eventually choose songs from the session, did some re-recording of others, and released the results as in July 2002 as Busted Stuff. Its debut single, “Where Are You Going,” was also featured on the soundtrack to the Adam Sandler flick Mr. Deeds.
In 2003, Matthews released his first solo album, the moody and brooding Some Devil. The album’s single, “Gravedigger,” earned Matthews the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
The Dave Matthews Band was back on the road in 2004, and also released more live material. In early 2005, they launched a website that featured progress reports on their next album in the form of video footage, diaries, and soundbites. When the flawed Stand Up finally appeared in May, it was the band’s first album of all-new material since 2001’s Everyday.
The year 2007 found Matthews and Tim Reynolds touring Europe and then America . A new record is also planned for late 2007-early 2008. On July 7, 2007, Dave Matthews Band performed on the American Live Earth concert at Giants Stadium.
Dave Matthews Band will perform a free concert for the Virginia Tech student body and faculty on September 6, 2007. Joining them will be John Mayer, Phil Vassar, and NaS.
The 2007 Dave Matthews Band Summer tour has included the unveiling of a number of previously unperformed songs (”#27″, “Corn Bread”). The 2007 tour also saw the resurgence of a number of fan favorites such as “Sweet Up and Down”, one of the few songs not reworked off of the band’s defunct Lillywhite Sessions, as well as “Shotgun,” an unrecorded song unveiled in 2006, which despite its popularity among the fan base, was once rumored to have been permanently shelved by the band at the completion of the 2006 Summer tour.
Buying Dave Matthews band concert tickets from a ticket broker is recomended as tickets will go fast.

Music Artist Bo Bice Bio

Music Artist Bo Bice Bio
Bo was nicknamed “Bogart” by his grandmother as a child and it was later shortened to “Bo.” Bo first made a real mark in regards to music when at the age of 13, he won a local school competition. When Bo was a kid however, the family moved around the South frequently, they lived in Georgia , Alabama , and Florida ; including the metro area of Atlanta .
When Bice was 15 years old the family moved to England in 1990, as part of Bo’s father’s European assignment with Coca-Cola in London . Bo would have graduated from high school in 1994 but in fall of 1993 he dropped out of high school just before turning 18 to move back to Alabama , where he earned his GED and attended some classes at Calhoun Community College . It was around this time when Bo worked with some English alternative rock musicians and upon graduating Calhoun and spending a semester at the University of North Alabama in Florence, Bo turned into a professional musician and performed in shows all across the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Europe.
For the 2005 season, American Idol producers raised their required age limit from 16-26 to 16-28 and although Bo did not quite fit the Idol mold, he decided to try out. He was one of the oldest contestants to audition and participate on American Idol, as well as being the oldest contestants to have progressed the farthest in the singing competition. A southern rocker in musical approach and appearance, Bo did not fit into the normal American Idol mold but since he was so different he became a fan favorite. In addition to his rocker ways, his early performance of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Whipping Post” drew raves from the judges and established him as one of their favorites in the competition.
In Alabama , May 24 was declared “Bo Bice Day” by Governor Bob Riley. In fact, Bo’s pride in being an Alabama native resulted in the adoption of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s hit ” Sweet Home Alabama ” as his “theme” during his run on American Idol.
On June 15, 2005, Bo married long-time girlfriend Caroline Fisher in Helena . After being signed to RCA Records, Bo’s first single was released June 21, 2005, and it was his version of “Inside Your Heaven”. The single debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and #1 on the Billboard Hot Single Sales chart. In late July 2005 it was certified Gold. The Bices’ first child, a son named Aidan Michael Bice, was born on September 24, 2005.
Bo’s solo debut album, The Real Thing, was released on December 13, 2005. It opened at #4. The Real Thing has the seventh-highest opening for a debut album by an American Idol finalist; it is also noteworthy that Bo Bice is one of several non-winners to achieve good success in record sales.
On September 12, 2006, Bo released a cover of The Chambers Brothers 1968 smash hit, “Time Has Come Today,” through various legal digital music download sites. The song, which does not appear on The Real Thing, is the theme song for a new Monopoly commercial. It has been rumored to be Bo’s new single and possibly a track on his second major album.
Bo Bice’s second album, to be released on indie label StratArt, is tentatively titled American Blood. The album’s release date has yet to be announced. Bo Bice will be going on a concert tour soon. Buying Bo Bice concert tickets from a ticket broker is recomended as his concert tickets will be going fast.

Music Artist 30 Seconds To Mars Bio

Music Artist 30 Seconds To Mars Bio
30 Seconds to Mars was created in 1998 by Jared Leto and his brother, Shannon, and it really just started as a small family project. Things began to speed up quickly, however, and Matt Wachter later joined the band as bassist and keyboard player. After a small revolving door of guitarists (as the band’s first two guitarists, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler, left the band due to issues primarily related to touring), the three auditioned Tomo Milicevic to finalize the band’s roster.
According to an interview from Virgin Records, the band’s name “actually comes from a thesis that [the band] found online [that] was written by a former Harvard professor. And one of the subsections of the thesis was titled ‘thirty seconds to mars’ and he goes on to talk about the expediential growth of technology that relates to humans and saying that we are quite literally thirty seconds to mars. What it means to us is, we thought it best described our music, in short.”
Although Jared Leto is a Hollywood actor, he originally preferred not to use this information to promote the band; in fact, the band used to refuse to play at venues that used his fame to promote shows.
30 Seconds to Mars’ first, self-titled album, produced by Bob Ezrin, was released in 2002 to mixed reviews and achieved sales of just over 100,000.
The band’s second album, A Beautiful Lie, was released on August 30, 2005. For this effort, the band traveled (during the course of three years) to four different continents, including five different countries, to perfect their sound and also to allow for Jared’s film career. The album was produced by Josh Abraham, whose producing credits also include Orgy, Velvet Revolver, and Linkin Park .
Because A Beautiful Lie was leaked five months before its release, the band decided to include two bonus tracks: “Battle of One” (an original song that was also set to be the album’s title track when it was first announced) and “Hunter” (a cover of the Bj

Mp3 downloads- Advantages

Mp3 downloads- Advantages
In the beginning when Mp3 first evolved in the music market, the majority of people had no or little use of them. But as the time passed, these players lost the popularity due to limited storage of data and short battery lives. But despite this unpopularity many computer programmers analyzed the potential of these devices as the files were much smaller but didn’t lose its sound quality.
When the broadband came into picture, internet rose to its time heights and made it easier to get free access of the wealth of MP3 music that is on tap and online. Many bands also distribute their music to be distributed over the internet because of its potential to reach mass audience. Some of the music websites also find it great to launch their won websites to post demonstrations, articles and materials they find their visitors shall find interesting.
Any new band will also go any lengths to get their music heard and the internet provides you with many such ways. They also post information about themselves and their music online where visitors can either download or stream music.
Such websites are customizable and provide generous quantity of space and also allow personal connections to develop between bands and fans that follow them. Some bands also preview their new album exclusively allowing their fans to hear the material before it hits the store. This arrangement is very beneficial for the listener and the musician but sometimes bands find it a reason to loose sales and profits.
There is a notion that music sharing online shall exert a negative impact on the sales of CD which is not very true because recently a band has made all their material available on the website and instead of losing CD sales they earned huge profits.

Mp3 Players Take the Reins

Mp3 Players Take the Reins
It first started with the cumbersome record player and turned into mp3 players as big as your thumb. A growing trend today seems to be the music player industry. It needs to be small and portable, yet hold 25,000 songs. It also must be fashionable. God forbid that you have last month’s model rather than the one that just came out. With that remark, it could be obvious that the iPod is the most popular of these new fangled devices.
Although the iPod is not the only mp3 player and more in the market, they are the ones the kids cry for. I personally just received a Zen Neeon for Christmas and am quite pleased with it. Just as designer brands exist for clothing and the such, the iPod is the designer brand for the mp3 player.
Not only do you need the latest trend of players, but also the latest carrying accessory. For the iPod shuffle, snug little ’socks’ to keep it safe from harm. Colorful and creative ’stickers’ or ’skins’ can be placed on the front of your device to spruce it up a bit. Carrying straps and cases of various size, shape and color make the selection even more appealing. There are even specialized sound systems and speakers that you can hook up to your device to enhance the experience. The cutest accessory, in my opinion, is the iDog, which lights up and dances to the music playing.
On some of the certain iPods, special features make room for more fun. Some iPod models include an assortment of games, like a music quiz, which plays a few seconds of a song, and you must pick the correct title. On the ‘new iPod’, you can hold music, photos and videos. Some companies’ models have the feature to select a choice of the backlight color. Most devices also have the feature of shuffling playlists.
With all of the choices out there, how could you go wrong? You have the opportunity to go out and pick the one that fits you best. What are you waiting for?

MP3 Players

MP3 Players – Many Capable Underdogs vs. the 800-lb. Gorilla
Anyone lover of gadgets and portable electronics knows what an Ipod is – and in fact, many people who have no interest in personal electronics know exactly what they are. With over 21 million units shipped, and over 75 per cent of the personal Digital Audio Player (DAP) market worldwide, it’s no surprise – Apple Computer Inc. has become the 800-lb. gorilla of portable music players.
What most people don’t know is the variety of alternatives to the Ipod – devices which can play music, videos, and more, and which accept Secure Digital (SD) cards, Compact Flash, and Memory Sticks, and replaceable (or rechargeable) AAA batteries, often for a lower price than a comparable Ipod. The iRiver devices offered by South Korean manufacturer Reigncom range from small players intended to hang on a keychain or as wearable jewelry style devices to full-fledged hard-drive based units pointed squarely at the Ipod’s market.
SanDisk (a maker of Secure Digital flash memory) offers the Sansa series of MP3 players, with the distinction of being able to accept the same SD cards as many digital cameras, offering additional storage options and the flexibility to swap music collections without long transfer times. Some of Samsung’s YP series of MP3 players offer a miniscule size, picture viewer and LCD monitor, all at a lower price than many competing units.
Although there are a variety of choices, one major reason for the Ipod’s dominance is the sheer irresistibility of its marketing. The unit is sleek and simple, stylized yet understated, much like the rest of Apple’s product offerings. For many Ipod owners, the device is a fashion accessory as much as a technological device – when walking down the street, the trademark white earbuds are clearly visible even from some distance.
So visible in fact that they have become an easy target for some muggers – but many Ipod owners would sooner risk robbery than trade in their favorite fusion of fashion accessory and music player. Many people find that a particular device simply suits their tastes better than all the rest, but in many cases, one device isn’t necessarily “better” than all of the others, only different and with more or fewer features. The selection of manufacturers and models presently available offers as wealth of choices for any portable audio lover, whether replacing an existing device or entering the world of digital audio for the first time.

MP3 Players – they’re so cool

MP3 Players – they’re so cool
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, you’ll know that the most popular mp3 player in the world by far is Apple’s iPod. It comes in all sorts of editions, including the Mini, the Nano, and the Shuffle – and every single one is a best-seller.
What you might not have realised, though, is that Apple isn’t at all the only game in town when it comes to mp3 players. In fact, they’re quite a recent entrant into the market. Companies like iRiver and Creative have been around a lot longer, and their players are usually worth considering too, as they can often be cheaper than the equivalent iPod or have more features.
When you’re comparing the prices of mp3 players, the one feature you should look at more than any other is capacity. Don’t lose sight of the fact that a 40GB mp3 player can store twice as much as a 20GB one.
However, there other features to look for. Even though everyone calls them mp3 players, mp3s are not the only format you might want your player to be able to play – if you want to use it with Microsoft’s Media Player, for example, you’ll need a player that is also capable of playing wma (Windows Media Audio) format files. If you want to buy music from the iTunes Music Store, you need a player that can play aac (Apple) format files.
Another issue is battery life. Almost all mp3 players are now powered by mains chargers rather than by changing the battery, but battery life varies wildly, from as little as 2 hours up to as high as 10. Make sure you don’t get saddled with a player that won’t work for a long time if you want to use it for extended periods away from a power outlet.
Of course, the most important feature to many people will always be how their mp3 player looks when they’re using and wearing it. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but don’t be fooled into buying a turkey just because it has a pretty design

MP3 Music Technology

MP3 Music Technology
Earlier form of music players required moving parts to read enclosed data on a tape or CD whereas MP3 players use solid state memory. An MP3 player is more of a data storage device with an embedded software application that enables users to transfer MP3 files to that player. MP3 players include some utilities to copy music from CD or websites and then organize them and create custom list of songs in the order you want to hear them. Such list of songs is called a “play list”.
The MP3 player is the combination of various technologies and its components are not only revolutionary but also prove to be a great consumer product. If you wish to store music as well allow the user to hear the songs played and for this the player first pulls the song from its memory, then decompresses the MP3 encoding, runs the decompressed bytes through a digital to analog converter and amplifies the analog signal allowing the song to be heard.
There are different stuffs or components but these could vary as the basic parts of a typical MP3 player. This includes data port, memory, microprocessor, digital signal processor, display, playback controls, audio port, amplifier and power supply.
The player is plugged into the USB port of your computer or a parallel port to transfer data. USB based players transfer data much faster than those using the parallel port. Memory types include internal flash memory, compact flash cards, smart media cards, memory stick and internal micro drive.
Except the last one, all the above mentioned players are of solid state memory and the advantage of solid state memory is that there are no moving parts that mean better reliability and music without any skips. Mp3 players also contain tiny hard disk drives that could store 10 to 150times more than flash memory devices.
The microprocessor is the brain of any player and monitors user input through the playback controls and displays information about the current song on the LCD panel and then sends directions to the DSP chip that informs exactly how the audio is processed. The DSP pulls the song data from memory and apply any special effects and streams to the amplifier. The DSP runs a decompression algorithm that compresses MP3 files and then turns back the bytes into sound waves.
The amplifier also boosts the strength of the signal and then sends it to the audio port whereby you can attach the pair of headphones. Most of the MP3 players are powered by battery.

MP3 Downloads How It All Came About

MP3 Downloads How It All Came About
When MP3s first appeared in the music marketplace, the majority of people had little use for them. Back then the players weren’t popular as they had only a small data storage capacity and short battery lives. Despite this general unpopularity, some insightful computer users glimpsed the potential of these devices, noticing that though the files were far smaller than uncompressed .wav files, there was no difference in the all-important sound quality.
Soon people in the know began converting their CD collections into MP3s. This allowed users gain fast access to a personal music library that could be stored on a personal computer, and helped them to create unique play lists incorporating their favorite tracks from a variety of albums. Talk about giving music a new lease of life!
But it was only a matter of time before someone made the connection, literally, to a friend’s computer, and realised that these MP3 files could be shared. Pretty soon increasing numbers of people were doing the same thing, and a host of file sharing networks sprang up, with students availing of their universities’ high-speed Internet connections to share their files quickly. After a short time large numbers of files had become generally available, meaning that any track you wanted could probably be found without too much trouble.
This new trend caused a great deal of alarm at record companies, as it posed an enormous threat to the music sales that were their lifeblood. But while these companies rushed into action by filing legal proceedings against the sharing networks and their users, others saw an opportunity too powerful to resist. Seeing a great future in online music distribution, these companies established their own download sites, where people could access music for a fee. These sites proliferated, allowing people to download MP3s by their favorite artists at a price comparable to that of a more traditional CD. The flexibility of the system was an intrinsic part of its success, as it allowed people to customize their music choices by downloading a whole album, or just some select tracks.
These days, as MP3 players gain the recognition they deserve, more and more people are purchasing music online. If you are a novice MP3 enthusiast, however, you should bear in mind that certain online stores do not support certain music players – music, for example, downloaded from iTunes may not be compatible with your Creative Zen player, while Napster’s music won’t play on an iPod. Avoid this frustration by always reading the small print before you download.
Happy listening!

MP3 Downloads Bringing Benefits to Everyone

MP3 Downloads Bringing Benefits to Everyone
With the availability of broadband Internet reaching all time heights, it has never been easier to access the wealth of free MP3 music that is on tap and online. Many bands allow their music to be distributed on the net because of the massive potential audience they can reach using this medium. A wealth of bands even use their own websites to post demos, b-sides and interviews, any material, in fact, that they hope prospective fans might find interesting, and get them hooked on their sound.
Any new band will go to almost any lengths to get their music heard and the Internet offers many straightforward ways to do this. Many new bands post information about themselves and their music at www.myspace.com where visitors can either stream or download music. The mini sites offered here are customizable and the quantity of space available very generous.
These sites thus allow personal connections to develop between bands and the fans that follow them. The up and coming band called ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’, for example, recently previewed their new album exclusively at www.myspace.com allowing their fans to hear the material before it hit stores. To date, this exclusive arrangement has lured tens of thousands of people to check out the band’s own site, offering them unprecedented publicity for free.
While this arrangement would seem advantageous to both musician and listener, some bands find the notion to be anathema, assuming that it will mean lost sales and ultimately, lost profits. Many more established bands have been slow to create their own music sharing sites, while others have fought to have file-sharing using peer-to-peer networks stopped altogether.
And yet the notion that online music sharing will exert a negative impact on CD sales seems to hold little water, as British band ‘Artic Monkeys’ recently displayed. The band made available on their website all their material and instead of losing out on CD sales, their debut album quickly became the fastest selling debut album of all time.
It seems that the ability to download MP3 benefits all concerned, both band and fan alike. So may the spirit of sharing long continue, so that everyone can continue to enjoy the fruits of the musicians’ labor.

Learn To Dance The Salsa

Learn To Dance The Salsa

The word “salsa” in Spanish means sauce. Salsa dancing is also known as slot dancing because couples don’t move around a large area of the dance floor; instead they stay in a more fixed or smaller area of the floor. So are you ready to learn Salsa dancing?
The salsa has an eight beat pattern that is made up of two bars of four beats. The Salsa music is usually complicated and fast with around 180 beats per minute. The salsa pattern is generally one of three steps and then a skipped step or a tap on the fourth beat.
The basic step is as follows: On counts 1, 2, and 3 the leader steps forward, then you replace the weight to your previous support foot keeping it in place, and then step backward. On counts 5, 6, and 7 you step backwards, then you replace the weight to your previous support foot keeping it in place, and then step forward again.
The follower does exactly the same steps but in the reverse order. The basic step is the basis for many of the other salsa patterns.
Some of the breaks to the basic step are:
1. Side Break – You start from either foot and step sideways; then you replace the weight to your previous support foot, keeping it in place.
2. Back Break – You start from either foot and step backwards; then you replace the weight to your previous support foot, keeping it in place.
3. Forward Break – You start from either foot and step forward; then you replace the weight to your previous support foot, keeping it in place.
There are many different salsa styles that involve different timing of the steps or different patterns as you move across the dance floor. Combine style with attitude and personal add ins and you get quite the salsa show!
The Cuban style can be danced as a contratiempo or on-one. With the Cuban Salsa, on counts 1, 2, and 3 a backward basic occurs while on counts 5, 6, and 7 a forward basic happens. The follower mirrors the leader’s movements. It is common practice with the Cuban to have the leader and follower circle each other regularly.
The Dile que no or cross body lead is also essential to the Cuban. This is the most complex of moves and is not designed for beginners. However, once you master it, it can be used in the Rueda, Cuban Casino, and Wheel Dance.
In Latin American countries the Columbian style is the most common. Here the leader and follower do their moves standing in one place. Most of the moves are based off the Cuban style with the main difference being lack of space involved. It’s a very sexy version to watch!
The LA style is a derivative of the Cuban style with the addition of the cross body lead. The leader steps forward on 1, on 2 and 3 it’s a step to the right while turning 90 degrees to face to the left. The follower then steps forward on 5 and 6, then on 7 and 8 turns while the leader is making the 90 degree turn. By the 8 count the leader and follower are in opposite positions. The Los Angeles is the flashiest form of Salsa dancing.
That’s just a few of the most common styles. Of course there are plenty others, and then there’s always the creative element that comes into play.
Learning the Salsa from an article can be a bit overwhelming, but if you really want to learn it check into either local dance classes or online dance lessons. You’ll be Salsa dancing like a pro in no time!

Is the product designed for a player at your level? Don’t buy a shredding lead guitar player package if you’ve never even strummed a chord. Learning how to play a guitar is like most things, you have to start with the basics. Everything builds upon everything else.
Is the course created by, or taught by, a professional guitar teacher? Furthermore, can you verify that the person can actually play the guitar well? Most online websites have little audio samples of the course designer. If there’s not one, maybe you should ask why.
There’s of course, no substitute for private lessons, but that can be expensive and inconvenient. Online materials are getting better and better. If you’re seriously looking to learn how to play the guitar, you should be able to find just what you need.

Learn Guitar Fast Online

Learn Guitar Fast Online – The Good & the Bad
There are several websites that provide guitar lessons, some even for free. The modules are usually designed by guitarists that have already found success in music and are now trying to provide some useful tips to beginner guitar players. There are both advantages and disadvantages if you want to learn guitar fast online.
The Good
Many of us don’t necessarily want to learn to play the guitar like pros. They just want to learn a few chords to play at campfires and impress their friends or family with their music playing skills. These people are not interested in investing time and money into a more complete learning program, such as private guitar lessons. For them, being able to learn guitar fast online is a great thing.
Even if you would like to learn how to play the guitar well, you might not have the time and resources to do it. If you have a job, a family and various errands to run every day, traveling back and forth to guitar classes might not be for you. Being able to learn guitar fast by practicing whenever you find some free time without having to leave the house is a good thing.
Online lessons are often more dynamic and successful in keeping you focused than a theory book. They usually include graphics, animated images and demo sounds to make it easier for you to learn. If you get stuck, you usually can ask the guitarist providing those lessons for help.
And last, but not least, online guitar lessons are very inexpensive, sometimes even free. In contrast, private lessons are often expensive and you have to pay per hour. Not everyone wants to invest so much money into learning to play the guitar.
The Bad
As tempted as you might be to learn guitar fast online, you have to consider the drawbacks as well. If you are serious about playing the guitar, nothing compares to a good teacher. Online lessons can only provide a standard teaching program, while a teacher can tailor his/her method on your learning style.
Online lessons can not actually focus on your particular learning needs. You might want to focus more on certain aspects, but a teaching program is standard and tries to respond to the needs of average guitar players. In contrast, a private teacher will give you personal attention and respond to your specific needs.
With online lessons, no one will applaud you when you’re progressing and get you motivated. A private teacher can provide you with positive feedback and knows how to increase your motivation when necessary.
Finally, you might be making some mistakes you won’t even notice and end up playing badly. With online lessons, no one will be there to correct them. A private teacher will spot your mistakes fast and correct them in time before they turn into long-term habits.
If you want to truly learn to play the guitar well, it might be better to dedicate a little more time and work to the learning process. However, for many people who don’t want to become superstars or don’t have the time to do it, the opportunity to learn guitar fast online is actually great.

Latest Trend for Wannabe Singers: Handheld Karaoke!

Latest Trend for Wannabe Singers: Handheld Karaoke!
With “American Idol” making news by drawing upwards of 40 million viewers, it’s no wonder that “The Singing Bee” and “Don’t Forget the Lyrics!” jumped on the musical television bandwagon. It’s not simply that Americans are keen on choosing the next singing sensation; rather, they have aspirations to BE the next music superstar. That’s why the latest trend in hot gadgets is to turn MP3 players and MP3 downloads into personal karaoke machines.
The concept is simple but ingenious. With specialized MP3 players, users can buy MP3 downloads, load them into the player, and input the lyrics of the songs – the original lyrics or their own versions. They can then remove the voice track from the song and record their own voices over the music while reading a display of the lyrics. After that, they can listen to their own voiceovers and share them with others.
The advantages of these types of players are obvious. For one thing, you don’t have to wait for a Karaoke Night at your local watering hole to sing your favorite tunes. For another, you actually have the opportunity to record your own voice and listen to what it sounds like – and record it again and again until you get it right. In addition, most karaoke CDs are from songs that are out of date and out of fashion. With these new players, you can purchase and download new releases of songs and current hits without having to wait for them to come out on karaoke CDs. Further, people of all ages can use it to sing their favorite tunes – in a truly convenient and portable handheld device. In addition, you can customize the lyrics by inputting your own version of the words to a song. Finally, it’s perfect for both those who have aspirations to become professional singers and those who just enjoy the pleasures of singing.
With these new devices, singing for pleasure is just the beginning. With an internal speaker and microphone, as well as a display screen, music fans can certainly remove the vocals from their favorite tracks and sing their own versions of their favorite songs. But they can then take their “albums” and incorporate them into social networking sites like MySpace or even upload them to YouTube. If they want to be America’s next singing sensation, they can even send them as auditions to shows that are looking for the next big star.
Pre-teens and teens in particular are causing this handheld karaoke phenomenon to gain momentum. After school gatherings and evening get togethers are abuzz with kids clamoring to try these new hot gadgets and urging each other on to record over their favorite songs.
Handheld karaoke machines are definitely heating up the electronics market and represent the next logical step in the singing phenomenon that began with “American Idol.”

Karaoke Music

Karaoke Music
Karaoke bars are quite popular these days. People come here to hang out and have fun. The word “karaoke” is derived form a Japanese word and means “empty orchestra”. It started in Kansai, Japan, in 1984, and spread to worldwide popularity. Music of any popular song is taken but the voice of the singer is absent or reduced. So, anybody who is interested can sing along using a microphone, usually the lyrics are also displayed .Some restaurants also have adopted this concept and they either have their in house singer or sometimes even visitors can sing.
Before karaoke music came in cassettes only but with technological advances they were replaced with CDs, VCDs and DVDs.KTV boxes were set up for people to entertain their friends or just to have fun. KTV means karaoke music video where the lyrics are displayed along with the audio track. It has become quite popular in US, Canada and other Western countries. People love it and it is a good source of entertainment.
Karaoke music popularity:
Karaoke music business has also picked up very fast and now one can find karaoke nights every day in almost every restaurant as it drives people to the place. Small karaoke box have been replaced by hi-fi sound equipments and to make the atmosphere catchier they even put lighting effects and have dance sessions. Now almost all kinds of music are available from rock to pop to hip hop and even religious hymns. The fun part is watching even those timid and shy ones, after consuming alcoholic beverages become bold and march towards the microphone and sing their hearts out ,sometimes even humiliating themselves.
Karaoke Machines:
Computer karaoke is also quite popular among the youngsters. Those who are shy to perform in front of people can now be a star and sing in their own room and also for those who want to improve their skills can also have practice sessions quietly in their room. You can pick karaoke softwares which can provide the means to hear music and also see lyrics on the screen. Quite a number of websites also offer this entertainment for their karaoke fans. All you need to do is download the files, load the song in your computer and you are set to begin.
A simple karaoke box consists of an audio input, an audio output and pitch controller. Some bars also have low end machines where they try to suppress the voice of the original singer so that you can hear only your voice. These machines are cheap. But those high in built machines have a technology that can electronically change the pitch level according to the key the singer chooses for the song.

Karaoke Gets Personal: Handheld Devices Turn Up the Volume

Karaoke Gets Personal: Handheld Devices Turn Up the Volume
While the subject of karaoke elicits a roll of the eyes for many people, there’s no doubt that karaoke has had a huge cultural impact, first in Japan and then around the world. For a myriad of reasons, people enjoy singing and performing, and there’s no device that’s more successfully leveled the playing field for public performances than the karaoke machine.
Traditional karaoke machines incorporate a microphone, a recording of the instrumental tracks of a song, an audio output device, and a video screen that displays the lyrics of a song. Singers (or those who consider themselves to be singers) use the microphone to sing along to the music while following the lyrics on a video screen. Karaoke singing gained popularity in Japan in the 1980s and then spread throughout the world in the 1990s. Typically, people would gather in bars or clubs for “Karaoke Night,” although some clubs featured karaoke every night of the week.
In the new millennium, karaoke machines got much more personal. Singles and families started buying home karaoke machines for their own enjoyment, as well as for entertainment at parties. It was easy to simply hook them up to the television, put a disc in the DVD player, and have a blast. Karaoke continued to evolve when “Karaoke Revolution” was released for the PlayStation 2 gaming console. The player used a USB microphone or headset to sing along and received a score based on his or her performance. Subsequently, several more versions were released, including a “Party Bundle” for the PlayStation2, Nintendo GameCube, and Xbox. The latest offering in the franchise, “Karaoke Revolution: American Idol,” built on the smashing success of the TV series, “American Idol.” In this version, up to eight people can compete in duets, in teams, or as single players.
There’s no doubt that “American Idol” has been a factor in the continuing popularity of karaoke. The premise that almost anyone has what it takes to become America’s next singing sensation (and that, even if you don’t, you can still get sympathy votes) has aficionados singing their hearts out – whether at home or in public.
The television series has also brought about the next evolutionary step in karaoke – turning MP3 players and MP3 downloads into hot gadgets that are perfect handheld karaoke machines. These specialized MP3 players allow aspiring “American Idol” contestants – and anyone else who enjoys singing out loud – to buy and download any song, input the lyrics, then remove the vocal track and record their own voices over the music while reading a display of the lyrics. The internal speaker and microphone, as well as the display screen, make recording and playing karaoke-style songs a breeze. That’s probably why this type of MP3 player is touted as the most widely used, pocket-sized karaoke player.
These types of hot gadgets, the continuing success of “American Idol,” and the spawning of similar television shows like “The Singing Bee” and “Don’t Forget the Lyrics!” all prove that karaoke is alive, well, and evolving to new heights.

Jordan McCoy Ready to Rock

Jordan McCoy Ready to Rock
Enter (soon-to-be 15 year old) Jordan McCoy — a vocally talented, charasmatic, impossibly cute All-American girl with a truly unique style about her. I believe this girl has every ingredient to rock things upside down and inside out retro style — like it hasn’t been done in some time.
Jordan caught my attention 3 years ago, in early June, on the American Idol spin-off show American Juniors. Within the first minute of seeing her in a personal interview (on one of the first few episodes), I knew Jordan had something special. When I watched her perform her first competition song titled ‘Stupid Cupid’, I knew this was a name that would certainly not soon be forgetten. By far, an amazing singer and seasoned performer. With brilliant consistency throughout the entire summer, that certain ‘X’ factor was more than apparent as each and every week went by, and will most certainly be that same present day factor to help seal her destiny as ‘The REAL McCoy’.
Not to my suprise one bit, Jordan was signed by Diddy (Bad Boy Records) in the early spring of 2005 and her debut CD should be out this September or October (2006). And judging by some early first-listen web site only releases (via myspace.com/jordanmccoy), Jordan will soon be a household name…
‘Just Watch Me’ is a very inspirational song (lyrics and arrangement) showing off Jordan’s unique and amazing sounding vocals and reflecting a true style of originality. Not a bad way to start off a national career!
‘Next X Boyfriend’, one of Jordan’s latest on-site listens, is a masterpiece combo of edgy rock and pop – as is her teaser snippet of ‘Good Guys’. Jordan’s vocals are primed to pump you up with satisfaction. I just can’t get enough.
After listening to these samples, I come off feeling as if 80s pop and present day ‘anything-goes rock’ are put in a blender and let loose. The result is quite refreshing.
I think two things. 1) Diddy (Sean Combs) picked a winner. 2) Jordan was picked by a winner. Diddy is a very talented guy who is a producer, writer, actor, singer, clothing designer, and much more. He is definitely a role model for young America and knows how to make things happen — and in style. I think Diddy will do Jordan justice 100% and at the same time justice will be brought back to ROCK in the American culture where it is still sort of lacking for the most part. — Improved, but yes, still lacking a bit…

Jimi Hendrix is the #1 Rock and Roll Star of All Time

Jimi Hendrix is the #1 Rock and Roll Star of All Time
I’ve been in rock and roll all my life and I admit it’s bit difficult to put Jimi Hendrix above Mick Jagger in terms of brilliant rock and roll stardom, but after watching several movies of both Jimi and Mick in concert, here’s why I would do it:
1. BEST MUSICIAN
Jimi Hendrix was the only true genius in rock and roll. The word genius is highly overused and it’s often applied to people who are extremely talented. I disagree with the dictionary when it equates genius with “exceptional intelligence”, and what I think the word genius is supposed to refer to is a person who creates something that’s new, and not only new, but significantly new, important, and somewhat of a milestone in human development. I call Albert Einstein the premier genius of the human race because the Theory of Relativity was a giant jump in the understanding of the way our universe operates and to this day, few people actually understand anything other than the bomb part. Jimi Hendrix was the genius of rock and roll because he was the only one who invented something new. It’s almost impossible to do anything that’s really new in the field of music because there are only eight notes in the Western scale so in a sense, all music is derivative. But Jimi invented guitar feedback and nobody before Jimi even thought about it. And Jimi took his invention one step farther. Until Jimi came along, all music since the time of Mozart and Beethoven has been built on chord structure and rock and roll music uses simple chord structure. Jimi actually used feedback alone to construct song structure in a few, but not all of his songs (i.e. Third Stone From the Sun). To this day, nobody has been able to do what Jimi did. In fact, Jeff Beck bought Jimi’s strat at an auction and even the super talented Jeff admitted that he can’t get the same sounds out of the very same guitar as Jimi got. With all due respect to Mick, he’s a brilliant singer and one of the all time great rock and roll songwriters, but he’s not actually a brilliant musician because he only plays rhythm guitar. I believe Mick would agree with me about Jimi being a genius guitar player because Mick was one of the first ones to discover Jimi when The Experience made their debut in the clubs of London. Along with John Lennon, Mick spread the word to the other British musicians about the new nova in the rock and roll sky.
2. BEST PERFORMER
It’s a tie between Jimi and Mick. Call it a dead heat with one survivor. If Elvis was still breathing he’d be breathing down both of their necks and I probably will get flack from a whole lot of people for saying that, and even more flack from the know-nothing fans of Madonna, Prince (whoever he is these days) and Michael Jackson (not to mention Roberta FLACK). Certainly Elvis came first and Elvis was The King, but Jimi and Mick both had their own unique styles and neither one were heavily influenced by Elvis in terms of their performances. Mick was influenced by James Brown’s dancing and only God knows who influenced Jimi’s performance style because he was truly an original. Besides, Elvis moved on to acting and he starred in tons of below average movies – and now I’ll really get flack! Unfortunately I won’t get Roberta. But seriously, Mick deserves an award for putting on a great show every single time he appears, he did that right from his debut as a young man, and he’s continued to do that as an old man. Jimi died as a young man. Both of them were sex stars on stage as well as off stage but watching Jimi on stage is nothing short of breathtaking. He had all the moves, he had the body of a black Adonis, he played his guitar with his teeth, behind his back, under his leg, and when he set fire to it at the end of his shows, he got down on his knees and prayed to the Guitar God who obviously listened to him. He wasn’t a dancer like Mick, he was a mover and a shaker of women’s “G” spots. People standing in front of his stage all had the same astounded expression on their faces as if to say, “I can’t believe this guy! What galaxy did he come from?”
3. SONGWRITING TALENT
“And the Wind Cried Mary”. Oh, Jimi, how poetic can you possibly be? So the galactic storm screamed “Jimi”, and what hetero man in his right mind doesn’t want that “Foxy Lady”? I suppose that a man who’s in a “Purple Haze” might not be able to recognize one, and a man who’s in a state of “Manic Depression” might not be able to get out of bed and do anything about it, but every time Jimi launches into Foxy Lady with his famous dissonant E chord my libido stands up and salutes. And every time I hear that all time classic feedback note in the middle of the song, it never fails to send shivers up my spine. Comparisons to other songwriters are superfluous. Jimi quite obviously wrote more than a few great rock and roll songs, he almost always had something important to say, and he always said it in a poetic way.
4. SINGING TALENT
As a professional rock and roll singer, it’s hats off time to Mick. Oh, I’ll get big arguments about that but people who would argue the point don’t understand rock and roll singing. It’s not about range, power, or technical perfection. It’s all about emotion and style. Mick knows how to sing without necessarily using words. Like Robert Plant, he often uses sounds alone to express emotions. A case in point is “Going Home” on the Aftermath album which consists of 11 minutes of Mick having sex with a microphone. Jimi Hendrix was actually embarrassed by his own singing because as a great musician, he recognized and understood the great singers. In the recording studio, he was the master of guitar but he recorded his vocals over and over and over again until he got something that he could just live with. But I put Jimi in the same class as Bob Marley and Bob Dylan. These are great artists who were all perfectly capable of putting across their own unique songs in a way that nobody else can. I’m not a fan of Dylan’s voice and when The Byrds recorded Dylan songs, they did a good job but they lack Dylan’s sarcasm and his almost bored feeling with his own poetic brilliance. I’m a big fan of Bob Marley and I like his voice, but I recognize that he’s not a great singer. It just so happens that I love Jimi’s voice. I hear Bob Dylan’s influence and I know that Jimi was a fan of Bob’s voice and of his lyrics. But Jimi did something very unusual vocally and in the theater, it’s called an “aside”. Jimi had a wonderful habit of flipping off little spoken phrases, very often interrupting himself while he was singing and it came off as being totally COOL. When it comes to singers, people either like them or they don’t and all I can say is that as a professional singer, Jimi’s voice works for me big time.
5. SEXUAL AURA
Every rock star has it. Jimi had too much of it for one man. I’m wildly hetero but I’m wowed by the sexual aura that surrounds Jimi on film. I was lucky enough to see him one time in person and I can testify that he was as HOT as it’s possible for a human being to be in the flesh. There are an uncountable number of women who would be quite willing to testify about Jimi’s abilities in the bedroom.
So in conclusion, it’s not necessary to be a great musician to be a rock star, just like it’s not necessary to be a great actor to be a movie star. This should be self evident and there are way too many examples in both fields to start listing them. But Jimi was a genius guitar player, a unique and atomicly powerful performer, a great songwriter, a very good singer, a super nova sex star, and a world class personality on top of everything else. That’s why I call Jimi Hendrix the Number One Rock Star of All Time.

Jazz Essentials

Jazz Essentials
I used to tell people I met on airplanes or at parties that I wrote about jazz for a living. Once they got past wondering just what type of “living” that amounted to, they’d smile and say, “I love jazz,” then pause, adding, “But I don’t know that much about it.”
They were leery, thrown off by chart-and-graph references to jazz’s development — stuff like how ’40s swing begat ’50s bebop, which gave rise to ’60s free-jazz and all that. As if there was a textbook (well, actually some critic friends of mine are writing one, but that’s another story) and there might be a test, you know. Not to mention the political squabbles: why swing was king or bop the thing or how ’70s fusion killed it all.
Or maybe they’d been put off by all that technical talk: flatted fifths and extended chords and the numbers behind swing’s rhythmic propulsion — like it was rocket science or something.
Then there’s the cult aspect: those older guys bending and swaying at the back of the club, making like Jewish elders swaying to an fro at temple, or the generalized bowing down before deities such as Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker and John Coltrane (not to mention the infighting about just who deserves saintly status).
Thing is, jazz isn’t any of that — and is all that. Appreciation requires no previous knowledge, yet continued listening offers all constant enrichment. The technical aspects of jazz’s musical achievements have both the beauty and complexity of higher math: And the music has genuine religious heft, owing to both time-honored spiritual traditions and in-the-moment meditative thought.
I can’t give you a 12-best list, or tell you that what follows tells the story in full. But the following list expresses lineages of thought, instrumental technique, rhythmic ideas and group conception. The dots are easy to connect, the names clearly indicated and the sounds unforgettable.
And this list is like those sponge toys that, placed in water, magically grow overnight. Listen, and you’ll find expansive knowledge easily absorbed, not to mention natural links to many more artists and recordings.
Listen Hot Fives And Sevens
Artist: Louis Armstrong
Release Date: 1925
To tell the story of jazz without Louis Armstrong up top is to cut off the head of the living organism that is jazz. Armstrong was a giant of a trumpeter, he was an influential singer and perhaps most important, he transformed jazz from a strictly instrumental music into a complicated blend of solo and ensemble sound. In that sense, nearly all the 20th century jazz that followed flowed from the innovation of these recordings. Over the course of these sessions, you can hear the transformation in process, from traditional New Orleans collective style to a different blend, with the clarion call of Armstrong’s horn pointing the way.
Listen The Art Tatum Solo Masterpieces Volume 1
Artist: Art Tatum
Release Date: 2001
Any one edition drawn from this eight-CD set will do. And any one is enough to give a sense of the enormity of Tatum’s genius and its far-reaching effects on all the music that followed. Tatum simply played more piano — got more out the instrument — than any other musician. He was a direct link from the whorehouse piano men to the classical soloist. Here, late in life, he plays song after song and, beginning with “Too Marvelous for Words,” he builds each one into a concerto of melody, harmonics, and improvisation that set the bar high and establish the logic for much of modern jazz.
Listen The Carnegie Hall Concerts: January 1943
Artist: Duke Ellington
Release Date: 1943
Little in jazz compares with the majesty, finesse, integrity and spark of Duke Ellington’s bands during the ’40s. It was a moment when jazz straddled two functions as it never will again: it was popular music, reflective of the nation’s heart and mind, and artistic revolution, charting new waters. In Ellington, as perhaps in no musician other than Louis Armstrong, jazz had a leader who understood both drives. It was a dream of Ellington’s to play Carnegie Hall, and it anticipated the Lincoln Center achievements of Wynton Marsalis today. This recording contains both shorter tunes (marvelous miniatures of great scope) and Ellington’s more ambitious, longer-form work “Black, Brown, and Beige.” There are stellar solo statements by players including saxophonists Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges, but really, it’s the brilliant cohesion of the full band and Ellington’s overall vision that makes this music timeless.
Listen Tomorrow Is The Question
Artist: Ornette Coleman
Release Date: 1959
Ornette Coleman’s music has always leaned on tradition — listen to some Charlie Parker and you’ll hear echoes of it here — distilled into something new and pointed straight toward the future, or curled up like a quizzical phrase. Here, Coleman’s title begs both ideas. And the music announced his pianoless quartet setup: the harmonics of chord changes alone would no longer confine Coleman’s music, replaced by his own personal science bent on liberation. The way Coleman and trumpeter Don Cherry shadow each other’s lines and exchange ideas, the process sounds closer to pure joy than hard science. Nearly a half-century later, it still sounds fresh.
Listen Alone In San Francisco
Artist: Thelonious Monk
Release Date: 1959
The hippest, most addictive thing I got turned onto in college was Monk’s music. I’d never heard anything like it, and it opened up a whole new idea for me of how the piano could sound and of what music could do: his compositions, his every arpeggio or tone cluster, contained math, R&B, Abstract Expressionism and slapstick humor. I went on to discover a world of jazz musicians, all touched directly or indirectly by Monk, but none who sounded quite like him. And though Monk recorded quite a few notable albums leading stellar bands, though his music led others to play with a special insight and cohesion, it’s Monk alone at the piano that I crave: Straight, no chaser. Here, early in his career, by himself, Monk transforms San Francisco’s Fugazi Hall with the unique architecture of his piano playing. This isn’t what all of jazz sounds like: It’s what the world of jazz after Monk looks like.
Listen Bill Evans Trio: Sunday At The Village Vanguard
Artist: Bill Evans
Release Date: 1961
There’s plenty of religious, folkloric and literary evidence to support the idea that three is a magical number: Bill Evans’s trio might be jazz’s mightiest argument for that case. Evans was one of jazz’s most lyrical pianists, and he’s at his best here. But it’s the nature of this trio that elevates most of all: neither Evans nor bassist Scott LaFaro nor drummer Paul Motian stick to customary roles. And in the three-pointed cheese slice of a room that is the Village Vanguard (the closest thing to sacred space remaining in jazz today) the music takes on a prayer-like quality.
Listen Live Trane: The European Tours
Artist: John Coltrane
Release Date: 1961
By 1961, Coltrane’s soloing style — the free flow through chord changes and scale-based improvisations that critic Ira Gitler dubbed “sheets of sound” — was his signature. His band concept was similarly bent on expanding boundaries and explosive energy. Coltrane may have laid down some of jazz’s most memorable studio sessions, but there’s really nothing like him caught live. These tracks, drawn from a three-LP set, find him in two powerful contexts over the course of four years: in a 1961 quintet including Eric Dolphy on alto sax, flute and clarinet; and fronting his classic quartet at concerts in 1963 and 1965. The fire and especially the communion between Coltrane and drummer Elvin Jones on the later material is a thing to behold.
Listen Spiritual Unity
Artist: Albert Ayler
Release Date: 1964
The first release on Bernard Stollman’s ESP label, this is the session that pushed Albert Ayler to the forefront of jazz’s avant garde. He remains a touchstone for any open-minded musician wishing to explore the sonic possibilities of a given instrument, to exploit the aggregate effect of any small group and to mine the spiritual heft of musical expression. To some, the arsenal of sounds Ayler coaxed from his saxophone — screams, squeals, wails, honks and a mile-wide vibrato when he felt like it — represented newfound contortions of sound; to others, they harked back to early jazz evocations, like Sidney Bechet’s soprano sax. Ayler’s appeal anticipates the current axis that connects punk rockers to free jazz: He took the simplest of song structures and turned them into the most complex of visceral splatters. His “Ghosts,” here rendered in two versions, will truly haunt you.
Listen Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods
Artist: Dizzy Gillespie And Machito
Release Date: 1975
Back when I edited a jazz magazine, I’d find regular annoyance with writers who thought Latin jazz was a tiny sidebar to American jazz. Jazz is many stories, a central one being the African Diaspora. The music of Latin America, South America and the Caribbean are cousins to American music (and they contain some rhythmic secrets we’ve forgotten, I’d say). Cuba in particular has a special musical relationship with the United States, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was one among jazz’s ranks who honored that truth with depth and style. Though Dizzy made his Big Cuban Bang decades earlier, this 1975 session finds him with the famed band of Frank “Machito” Grillo, featuring the great Cuban trumpeter Mario Bauz

Jam Bands

Jam Bands
While this may not be the ideal forum for a rigorous scholarly discourse on the etymology of the term “jam band,” a definition is certainly in order. Indeed, some observers have suggested that the groups encompassed within this broad(ening) umbrella are unified less by their sounds than by their supporters. And while a grassroots commonality exists among fans of the circuit, there are musical similarities among the bands as well: they embrace improvisation as a performance ethic and, more importantly, they are unified by a penchant for bending and blending established genres. The performers listed below cannot be neatly sequester into bluegrass, jazz, blues, funk or electronica camps — they are all of these at once.
Derek Trucks Band
Artist: The Derek Trucks Band
Release Date: 2004
This disc offers a tantalizing, protean take on the group’s “world soul.” While half the current band (vocalist Mike Mattison and keyboard player/flautist Kofi Burbridge) was not yet in the fold for this 1997 release, the enduring rhythm section of Yonrico Scott and Todd Smallie lays it down with verve. Trucks redefines the context and parameters of the slide guitar throughout. Highlights include versions of John Coltrane’s “Naima” and “Mr. PC,” as well as the band’s own “Evil Clown” and “Out of Madness.”
The Jammy’s Award Ceremony: Live From The Theater At Madison Square Garden, 3/16/04
Artist: Various Artists
Release Date: 2004
Since the Jammys debuted in 2000, the annual awards show and celebratory concert has embodied improvisation by pairing musicians with minimal (or no) prior rehearsal time. Despite the occasional implosion, the ensuing spontaneous collaborations are often inspired. This collection, drawn from the 4th annual show, weighs towards the latter result with Dickey Betts, Assembly of Dust and Edie Brickell joining in for two of Betts’ classic compositions (”Blue Sky” and “Ramblin Man”), Slick Rick melding with the Disco Biscuits for his “La-Di-Da-Di” and the Harlem Gospel Choir appearing with Soulive (featuring Maktub vocalist Reggie Watt) for a rousing version of “Stop Messing Around.”
Ask The Fish
Artist: Leftover Salmon
Release Date: 1995
For many years Leftover Salmon was Colorado’s definitive polyethnic bluegrass amalgam. (And then the String Cheese started to age…). Here, Leftover offers a collection of lively originals and traditional covers that occasionally, affectionately eschew tradition. While Ask the Fish conveys the group’s spirited irreverence (”Festivaaal!”), it’s also worth noting that the late Mark Vann was a two-time winner of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s annual banjo contest, and his peerless picking helps make this early live album a showcase for the band’s technical proficiency.
Live At Lupos, 6/12/2004
Artist: The Slip
The Slip bridges the bounds between jazz and pop aesthetics, with results that are occasionally abstruse yet often sublime. This release, a 2005 Jammy Award nominee for Live Album of the Year, presents the band in fine fettle at Lupo’s in its native Rhode Island. Tracks such as the 20-minute “Nellie Jean” demonstrate that while the trio maintains an affinity for abstraction, it never neglects the sweet spots.

Artist: Sound Tribe Sector 9
Release Date: 2004
Heralded as one of the progenitors of livetronica, this release finds Sound Tribe in the studio. Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace captures STS9 at a critical moment, when they transitioned away from their jazz and funk origins. The album rewards a focused listening session, as, like the band’s live shows, it’s best experienced as a series of entwined movements rather than a collection of compositions.
All Kooked Out!
Artist: Stanton Moore
Release Date: 1998
Galactic drummer Stanton Moore is one of those estimable players now vesting traditional New Orleans funk with a potency and primacy for a new generation. All Kooked Out! is one of the Crescent City native’s initial efforts to this end, presaging some of his later shape-shifting jazz expressions with Garage A Trois. Eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter and “saxophonics” purveyor Skerik are Moore’s core band for these 13 tracks, which also feature fellow Galactic resident Ben Ellman and Sun Ra alum Michael Ray.
Steve Kimock Band Live at 07/17/2004
Artist: Steve Kimock Band
Steve Kimock is justly characterized as an heir to Jerry Garcia — and not only because the late Grateful Dead guitarist identified him as a personal favorite. The two musicians share a drive to uncover novel tones and subtle shadings in any material while utilizing a similar sense of pacing. Current SKB staples drummer Rodney Holmes and guitarist Mitch similarly angle for adventure during the quintet’s performance in an appropriate setting at the Vibes.
Weightless in Water
Artist: Strangefolk
Release Date: 2004
Since coming together in 1991, Strangefolk have fused a California ’70s folk-pop sensibility with an affinity for improv. Weightless in Water, the band’s finest effort, translates some more expansive tunes into the studio setting at a halcyon moment with co-founder Reid Genauer still in the fold (he would depart in September 2000 and form Assembly of Dust nearly two years later). Many of these offerings remain in active rotation both by Folk and AOD, including “Roads,” “Westerly,” “Valhalla,” “All the Same” and “Whatever.”
Umphrey’s McGee Live At Fox Theatre 03/29/03
Artist: Umphrey’s McGee
Release Date: 2004
Relix cover boys Umphrey’s McGee (Dec/Jan 2005) also were anointed by Rolling Stone as “leading contenders for Phish’s jam-smeared crown.” This live set gives a sense as to why, demonstrating the band’s prog-precision and high humor. Along with signature compositions “Uncle Wally” and “YYZ,” this Fox Theatre performance presents two of the group’s collective, semi-structured improvisational exercises: “Jimmy Stewart” and “Jazz Odyssey.”
Weir Here: The Best Of Bob Weir
Artist: Bob Weir
Release Date: 2004
Bob Weir is not only an underappreciated rhythm guitar player, but his enduring compositions are sometimes denied their due. Nonetheless, Weir remains a vital artist as his current group, RatDog, embodies the ethos of the Grateful Dead, recasting older material while delivering vibrant new compositions. This retrospective mostly focuses on Weir’s contributions to the good ol’ GD (most notably through the live cuts, from a ‘71 “Truckin” on through an ‘89 “Music Never Stopped”) with a nod to recent essential RatDog (”Ashes and Glass” and “Two Djinn”).

Jam Bands

Jam Band Writing Journals

Jam Band Writing Journals – Track Your Shows
Following jam bands is a blast because of the music, places you see and cool people you meet. Jam band journals are great ways to keep track of your shows.
Jam Band Journals
Undoubtedly, the Grateful Dead was the greatest jam band in history, but others such as String Cheese Incident have carried on the tradition. Whatever your favorite band is, think back to the last show you saw. What sticks out in your mind? Now think about the first time you ever saw the band. Do you remember the set, people you met and so on? Probably not. The experiences you’ve forgotten are lost to time. If you had kept a jam band journal, this wouldn’t be the case.
There are famous instances of people keeping journals throughout time. Of course, Anne Frank’s Diary is the best example. In her diary, Anne kept a running commentary of the two years her family spent hiding from the Nazis. While your show experiences better be more lighthearted, keeping a journal will let you remember them as the years pass.
A good jam band journal combines a number of characteristics. First, it should be compact so you don’t have to take up unnecessary space for other things. Second, it should have a case to protect it from the elements. Third, the journal should contain blank areas to write email address, phone numbers and set lists. Fourth, the journal should contain cue spaces to remind you to keep notes on specific things. Cues should include:
1. Set list,
2. Location and directions,
3. Accommodations and camping information, if any,
4. People you met, email addresses and phone numbers,
5. Grub and grog,
6. High points of the show, and
7. Any unique things that occurred.
As the shows add up, you’ll be able to look back through your journal to past shows, find information to locate people and generally laugh yourself silly about things that happened. Don’t lose your experiences to time.

Is the Apple iPod going to last or burn out like the Apple Macintosh?

Is the Apple iPod going to last or burn out like the Apple Macintosh?
Today the Apple iPod is leading the market in the portable music player industry, having sold around 15 million iPods since they were released. But some people are now saying like the Apple Macintosh once an industry leader the iPod will also become a memory.
Looking to the near future at the main competition for the Apple iPod are the new age mobile phones. Not only do they have the normal features of a mobile phone but they’re also adopting a higher standard of digital camera and a built in MP3 player. Unless Apple decides to bring the iPod into the mobile phone industry, we may see them move to the back of the shelf at ebay.
Below are an example of some already available mobile phones that incorporate the higher standard digital camera and MP3 player:
• Motorola MPx220
• Siemens SX1
• Sony Ericsson P910i
• Sony Ericsson W800i
Looking at the Sony Ericsson W800i, this mobile phone offers a 2 mega pixel digital camera with video recording capability. Also a built in MP3 player and the phone comes with a 512mb Memory Stick™ PRO Duo. This maybe only capable of holding around 150 music tracks or 10-15 full length CDs. You can upgrade the memory stick to 1GB doubling the storage capacity.
Obviously the Sony Ericsson W800i does not have the storage capacity of a 60GB iPod video, but looking at the technology trends everything is getting smaller with higher storage capacity.
Once mobile phones have a higher storage limit (60GB) they will also have the capability of playing MP4. Then your every day mobile phone will be a Phone, Camera, MP3 music player and an MP4 video player which fits in your pocket.

Is it REALLY Safe Getting Free MP3 Downloads Using File Sharing Networks?
Many people use P2P file sharing networks to get free MP3 downloads – and variety of other free file downloads including; movies, games, ringtones, videos, tv shows and software files.
However, the truth is that in using a free P2P file sharing network, you could be putting your computer and online privacy at risk. And if that’s not bad enough, using a free MP3 downloads file sharing program could also get you in serious trouble with the RIAA and the MPAA.
It’s no secret that the RIAA has been actively seeking out music file sharers online who illegally download or share copy-righted music online. And recently, the MPAA has started their own campaign to sue file sharers that are downloading and sharing movies illegally as well.
Furthermore, besides possible RIAA MPAA copy-right infringement lawsuit risks, there’s more to be concerned about. In using file sharing networks to get free MP3 downloads, there are a variety of hidden dangers you need to be aware of, including these top risks …
The Risks of Using File Sharing Networks:
1) Adware – Most file sharing networks have adware installed in their software programs. Adware, advertising-supported software, is a business model that works by large media companies offering shareware developers banner ads to put in their products. In return, the media companies provide the software developers a portion of the revenue generated from the banner sales. The truth is that adware will load your pc with large amounts of unwanted advertising and can cause a variety of computer system problems.
2) Spyware – Spyware is often installed in shareware downloads, including free MP3 music download networks. Spyware secretly sneaks around in the back-round of your computer gathering information about you and your surfing habits. Spyware has the ability to perform activities hidden to you – and can even change files and your computer system settings.
3) Spoofing – Many P2P file sharing networks are stuffed with corrupt and fake files. Spoofing occurs when you start a free MP3 song download, but instead of your MP3 song being downloaded, you get a corrupted music file, or a 20 to 30 second music loop that continues on for about 3 – 4 minutes. There is talk on the net that the RIAA may be behind many of these spoofing tactics as a way to get people to pay for legal MP3 downloads.
4) Pornography – Pornography is a very serious problem with P2P file sharing networks. Every P2P network user should be aware that porn peddlers camouflage their software as a new game download or free MP3 downloads files to get you to click on the link. Once you click you’ll be redirected to a porn site – it’s sneaky and a very serious problem if children get access to file sharing networks.
Free MP3 Downloads Summary:
So is it safe getting free MP3 downloads using file sharing networks? The truth is that controversy, dangers and risks continue to surround the use of P2P file sharing networks.
Furthermore, the possible RIAA and MPAA copy-right infringement lawsuit risks are very real. It’s critical to learn all you can about a file sharing network before using it. A little caution and common sense goes a long way when looking to download music online.
And remember, there are many affordable legal music sites available for you to choose from that are risk-free and worry-free. You can even find a good selection of free legal music download sites that give you 100% free legal music.

Ipods – Finding The Right iPod Speakers
Nowadays, you can throw a party anywhere as long as you have an iPod and a set of iPod speakers. They are so tiny, yet they can boom the bass and shake up the place.

The portable models are battery operated and has a size just slightly larger than iPod Nano and some weighs only half an ounce! Although portable iPod speakers offer sound better than most computer speaker, it can’t compete with the home only or standalone iPod speakers that can produce louder, crisper, and more booming sound, for these iPod speakers get their power directly from an electical outlet that gives much energy compared to a low voltage battery.
Below are the best in iPod speakers that could rock us out of our seat with their booming sound.
